Three Tips for Beginning Golf Players

It seems like those people who play the game of golf at least one time get hooked and can’t wait to play this well liked game on a consistent basis. It is a game that is good for a lot of people because it is competitive, but not that exhausting.

Whether you are just beginning to play the game or have played for some time and cannot get it right, you should think about taking a few lessons. This is because a professional will know exactly which areas of your game you need to improve. This is because he or she will analyze your game objectively. Also, a pro can bring to your attention any bad habits that you are doing. He can help you correct them. However, make sure that you honestly explain about your problems, goals and types of shots that you are having problems with. Also, you need to ensure that your instructor understands how you like to learn things. Do you want to see him do it first and then copy him? Or, do you just want him to tell how it’s done? Your preference does not matter.

The least difficult way to improve your golf game is to contract a professional instructor. Since you are spending good money for his time, you really should take advantage of using your instructor.

This means that you need to check your shyness at the door and speak up. If something confuses you, then tell the instructor. You should not be afraid to disclose your goals and the issues that you are having. Also, try to stay relaxed. This is because if you are anxious, you will swing too fast and you can’t concentrate. You will have to concentrate on the game and instructor or you are wasting time and not learning a thing.

When you first want to play golf, you have a few things to decide. You can learn a lot from your friends, which is how a lot of people first begin. However, a problem might exist if you learn bad habits that will have a negative impact on your swing, because although your friends might have a good golf game, this does not mean they can teach you properly. Also, you can learn by just practicing your swings at the golf range and figure out how your swings affect the direction and distance. This method can consume a lot of your time because it is based upon trial and error. The most simplest way to learn the game of golf is by getting professional lessons, which is also the fastest way to learn. You will not have bad habits in the end, which will help you avoid a lot of disappointment. The instructor will require you to fix your technique.

Clearly, there are many factors involved in learning to play golf and improving your game. Being persistent and dedicated when combined are excellent for turning you into a good golf player. However, do not think that you will become great instantly because even the professionals take many years to get to this level. If you concentrate on the game, find time to enjoy yourself and calm down, you will see an improvement in your game. This will happen consistently until you can be on the golf course and others are envious of you.

Area golfers earn trip to SCGA Tournament

1 Redlands’ K.K. Limbhasut and Colton’s Ryan Smith each shot a two-over-par 73 at the CIF-SS Individual Championship finals Monday at the Babe Zaharias course of Industry Hills Golf Club, moving on to the SCGA Tournament next Tuesday at the Brookside Golf course in Pasadena.

Joining Limbhasut and Smith, who will play at UC Riverside next season, is Rancho Cucamonga sophomore Rico Hoey, who shot a 75 to just make the cut. Barely missing the cut of 75 were Ontario Christian’s Bradley Fox (76), Redlands East Valley’s Austin Housley (78) and Aquinas’ Kyle Didier (79). Other local players to compete were Ontario Christian’s Trebor Bitanga (90), Upland’s Josh Davis (90) and Victor Valley Christian’s Kyle Wilson (92).

2 In the listing of qualifiers for Friday’s CIF-SS Masters track and field meet at Cerritos College, the Sun accidentally forgot to mention San Gorgonio junior Ryan Simms-Hunter, who qualified in the discus after finishing second at the CIF-SS Division 1 meet this past Saturday.

Simms-Hunter, who just missed out on Masters qualifying a year ago, could be a threat to win Masters, as his throw of 180 feet, seven inches almost did the trick at the Division 1 meet. He’s one of several county athletes who will participate Friday starting at 4:30 p.m. Among other athletes to watch will be Miller’s Davonte Stewart (100- and 200-meter dashes), Summit’s Devon Blackmon (110 hurdles), Sultana’s Jaelen Spencer (triple jump), Ayala’s Brea Buchanan (100 and 100 hurdles), Carter’s Shanice Stewart (100 hurdles and long jump) and Los Osos’ Kira Moreland (long jump).

3 The softball and baseball playoffs are getting down to the nitty gritty, with quarterfinal action taking place today (softball) and Friday (baseball). Needless to say, there are several headliner games that stand out.

In softball, Mountain Valley League foes Rim of the World and Citrus Valley will host Division 6 playoff games today. Rim will entertain top-seeded Downey Calvary Chapel while the Blackhawks, the No. 3 seed in the division, host Paraclete. Division 4 will also be interesting, as top-seeded Aquinas plays at Fullerton Troy while Kaiser plays at Garden Grove. Mesa Grande Academy plays at Faith Baptist in D7 while Chino Hills heads to Whitter La Serna in D3.

Friday’s baseball action has a juicy matchup in Division 3, as San Gorgonio plays at top-seeded Bonita in a rematch of last year’s semifinal won by the Bearcats. No. 3-seeded Redlands hosts Etiwanda in a tantalizing Division 2 matchup while Rialto hosts Irvine Woodbridge in D3 and Oak Hills hosts Pasadena Maranatha in D5. Kaiser and Chino play on the road in D4, as the Cats play at No. 2-seeded La Puente Bishop Amat while Chino plays at Torrance.

4 Ontario baseball coach Mike Sweeney has stepped down, according to the school’s athletic director Rhonda Purwin. The Jaguars will announce their new head coach on June 14 after the next board meeting.

Sweeney, the father of a 16-year major league baseball veteran by the same name who retired this year, posted a record of 7-38 in two seasons at the helm of the program.

Ontatio is also taking applications for the head football coaching job that was vacated by Steve Randall earlier this year.

5 The Sun is accepting nominations from coaches for all-area baseball and softball teams. Coaches that want to nominate a player can send an email to tj.berka@inlandnewspapers.com or sports@inlandnewspapers.com. Please include the athlete’s name, position, year, statistics and any applicable honors that you feel should be highlighted.

T.J. Berka can be reached at 909-483-9305 or at tj.berka@inlandnewspapers.com. Check out his blog at blogs.sbsun.com/sb/berka.

Can anyone give me a formula to work out my golf handicap?

I would like a formula to work out my golf handicap without having to register on a site or download any software…

1. take the scores from the last five rounds (18 holes each) that you played.

2. Look up the rating and slope for the course that you played for each of these scores. This information is usually printed on the scorecard, although you can also get the rating and slope by calling the course.

3.Subtract the course rating from the score you earned on that course.

4. Multiply that number by 113.

5. Divide that number by the slope of the course. This number is the differential.

6. take the lowest of your five differentials and multiply it by 0.96, and you have your handicap

The USGA method of determining an individual's handicap is to take the best 10 of the last 20 rounds played. Total those. take 1/10th of the total. Subtract the par of your course. You have a difference.Multiply that difference by .96 and you have the handicap for your course. If you are playing elsewhere your handicap will be adjusted by the difficulty of their course as compared with yours.

The link provided by fromthegettgo pretty much sums up on how to calculate your handicap index yourself. If you don't want to go through the trouble of doing it yourself, here are some FREE sites that will do that for you.
http://golf.about.com/od/handicaps/l/blh…
http://golf.sports.yahoo.com/
http://www.stracka.com/stracka.asp

The only problem with calculating your own handicap or using one of these free sites is that the handicap index might not be recognized by other clubs and tournaments because they are not USGA Official Handicap Index. But if you only needed to know your handicap for a friendly round of betting with your friends, or use it as a guideline to improve your game, it should be sufficient.

If you are in the UK rather than the USA, you don't have to worry about complicated things like slope ratings – the British CONGU system is much simpler. If you were joining a club, what they would do to assign you a handicap is:

You play 3 rounds with a member and get them to sign your scorecard each time.
On those cards, adjust the number of shots taken per hole so that it is never more than 2 over par (3 over for ladies) – so anything over 5 on a par 3 is made into a 5, and so on.
Add up the adjusted total for each card, and take away the Standard Scratch Score for the course (SSS) which should be printed on the scorecard.
Your handicap is the lowest of the three totals, but no more than 28 for an adult male, 36 for a lady. Juniors can have higher handicaps – up to 54 – at the discretion of their club.

So if your best card was originally a 98, but had two triple bogeys and a quadruple bogey, that makes net 94, and if the SSS of the course is 71, your handicap is 23.

Once you have your handicap, it will be adjusted depending on how you score in each round. first, as before, adjust your scorecard to remove very bad scores – but now the reduction is to NET double bogey (ie for a 23-handicapper, +3 on a hole with a Stroke Index of 6 or above, +4 on one with SI 5 or lower). Compare this total to the SSS.

If you shoot BETTER than your handicap, you will lose a certain number of shots for EACH shot you are under net par: 0.1 if your playing handicap is under 5; 0.2 if it is 6-12; 0.3 if it is 13-20; 0.4 if it is 21-28; 0.5 if it is 29 or over. So a 23-handicapper shooting 20-over has his handicap reduced by 3 x 0.4 = 1.2, to 21.8.
There is then a "buffer zone" in which your handicap doesn't change. If you shoot between net level par and +1 (hcap 5 or less), par to +2 (6-12), +3 (13-20), +4 (21-28) or +5 (29+), your handicap is unchanged.
If you shoot worse than this buffer zone, your handicap goes up by 0.1. Note that this is a fixed amount, not based on how many you are over par – so if a 23-handicapper shoots 35 over par, his handicap only goes up by 0.1

This calculation yields a new EXACT handicap. Your PLAYING handicap is your exact handicap rounded to the nearest whole number (halves rounded up). Any future adjustment are then made to this exact handicap.

take your best 10 rounds of your last twenty, and average the scores over par. If the course was tougher, indicate that. then take the average and it will reflect an idea of what your handicap could be.

You might want to check the site in the source link – they have a lot of good golf info and may have the answer to this question.

Women in Sports: International duo boost ASU golf

By Tim Gayle, Montgomery Advertiser, Ala.

may 1–Amelie Buhl and Aileen Meredith are part of something special, something they never would have envisioned five years ago.

Both are major components in Alabama State’s Southwestern Athletic Conference championship women’s golf team, international players leading the surge at an HBCU (Historically black colleges and universities) program.

“It’s a big change compared to where I’m from,” said Meredith, a sophomore from Apia, Samoa. “At first, I wasn’t expecting it to be an all-black school but after the first semester my freshman year, I adapted well. at first, everything was hard and difficult but now it’s nothing to me. I’m used to it. I’m enjoying myself here.”

Golf coach Gary Grandison has taken a risk signing international students, considering that fact that minorities are fighting for the same positions. The former Alabama State golf captain can simply point at the results, however, observing that he would never hesitate to look across the street if that’s where the best player was located.

“We have the amenities to accommodate a top-caliber athlete,” he said. “The key is we have to make sure these athletes are aware of what we bring to the table. We have some strong (academic) programs that are under the radar.”

So he went to Miami for a tournament involving the top high school players from around the world and found Meredith. he found D’Andrielle and Danielle Robinson, twins from the Bahamas, at a south Florida tournament. he found Buhl, a true freshman of Manchengladbach, Germany, on the Internet.

“This was my first time in the States,” Buhl said. “I was looking at a lot of schools, and I came to Alabama State because I saw Aileen and how she came all the way from Samoa and how she played and her scores. Then I saw the (scores of) the team and their improvement. I talked to coach Grandison and his plans for the future and his goals for the team.”

The great thing about international players is they don’t have any preconceived notions about colleges. The fact that Alabama State historically hasn’t been strong wasn’t a factor. The choice of an HBCU over a small program in the Midwest was never considered. The players listened to Grandison and believed.

“Alabama State has a lot of good facilities to get us to this (postseason) level,” Meredith said. “In past tournaments this year, we’ve played against teams that were in the top 10. Alabama State really is the place to be right now.”

Meredith is a large reason for Alabama State’s first-ever trip to the NCAA regionals because her success lured Buhl to campus. Buhl was the low medalist in the SWAC Championships in Louisiana on April 19, finishing just ahead of Meredith. A week later, Buhl finished second in the National Women’s Collegiate Golf Classic at Stone Mountain, Ga., a tournament pitting the best HBCU programs in the country. Meredith finished third.

Alabama State, as a team, won both events.

“Last year’s team was not challenging and competitive at all,” Meredith said. “The players were good, but they were not fully committed as I was. Whenever I was first at a tournament, our team was last or next to last.

“I think we’re on the right track right now. The last few tournaments, we haven’t played to our best. but in this (NCAA) tournament, I know the girls will play much better, especially for something we’ve all been wanting to get to.”

Alabama State is the 24th seed among the 24 teams competing in the NCAA East Regional at Daytona Beach, Fla., this weekend, relying on a freshman from Germany and four other international players to lead the way.

“College golf is a new experience for me, but I played a lot of golf in Germany and in Europe,” Buhl said. “But we don’t play college teams so it’s a whole different competition. It’s a great opportunity for golf players to study and play golf at a high level.

Are the Taylormade 2009 Burner golf Irons forged or cast?

Can't find the answer online, thanks.

The TM Burners are cast. TM has strayed away from forgings with their last few iron lines – only the TP MB in their '09 offerings.

You can have the Burner irons bent, but I wouldn't go more than about 2 degrees on any iron, stainless or carbon. Some club fitters or manufacturers won't say this, but once you get more than 1.5 or 2 degrees of bend it can start to effect the strength of the metal. You may not notice it initially, but you will over time.

If you need a 3-up lie, most manufacturers will produce a 1 or 2 degree upright clubhead, and you just have it bent 1 additional degree. at least one major manufacturer offers this for no additional charge.

Good luck!

CG+1 is right; virtually all of the game improvement irons are cast. Casting is the only way to achieve the necessary perimeter weighting required for providing the forgiveness essential to game improvement clubs. Forged irons are mostly for better players; single digit handicappers who need to be able to hit a variety of shot shapes and work the ball. People who have problems with slices and hooks ought not try to hit forged clubs.

These clubs can be bent a little, but as CG+1 stated, have them put you on a loft/lie monitor and check out the clubs before you bend them. Often in mass produced equipment, each club in a set of irons will have a variation of one or two degrees in loft and lie from 'standard'. I once had a set where I hit the 6 and 7 iron roughly the same distance; when I took them to the shop, I discovered they were almost the identical loft. they were supposed to be 4* different, but one was 1.5* too much and the other 1* too little, so they were only 1.5* apart. This sort of thing is very common in off-the-shelf clubs.

The other posters are also correct about limiting the amount of bending to one or two degrees and once they are bent, do not try to have them bent back to original shape. that is why it is important to ensure you check the clubs' lie before bending them.
