June 28–The Tivy cheerleaders need new pompoms for the 2011 football
season.
In most sports, if the team needed new equipment, a budget request might be submitted, and pompoms would be added to an online shopping cart.
for The Tivy cheerleading team, it doesn’t quite go like that.
instead, the team and coaches spend two months planning, reserve an afternoon at Scott Schreiner Golf Course and hold an 18-hole tournament.
for the only athletic team not funded by the Tivy athletic department, that’s just how it goes as the Lady Antlers held their 6th Annual Tivy Cheerleader Tournament on Monday at Scott Schreiner Golf Course.
with 110 golfers playing in the event, it was the largest field in the tournament’s history.
The tournament is the only fundraiser the team is allowed to do, which means the record turnout is a welcoming sign for rising junior and varsity cheerleader Celina Leyva.
“We have to buy our own uniforms, we have to buy new pompoms,” she said. “We do all the pep rallys and we need (things) for that.”
“Everything you see thrown at football games,” Alexie Fox added, “We have to buy those with our own money.”
at $80 per player, the group can use those funds to gas up the bus and possibly buy rain jackets for this season.
The fundraiser also had 130 different raffle prizes provided by local sponsors.
Republicans in action Monday
The Kerr County Republican Party held the bill Williams 2011 Golf Classic on Monday at Riverhill Country Club.
with the course covered with political signs, some of the Hill Country’s most prominent politicians took to the Byron Nelson-Joe Finger designed course.
The field had a nice turnout of 71 players. The $125 dollar registration fee went toward the party’s goal of raising $10,000 to $11,000 for its, and possibly independent, local and state candidates, said John Elliott, the Kerr County Republican chairman.
Elliott added that some of the proceeds also go to local charities.
