Pompoms from golf balls at Schreiner

By Joe Harrington, Kerrville Daily Times, Texas

June 28–The Tivy cheerleaders need new pompoms for the 2011 football

season.

In most sports, if the team needed new equipment, a budget request might be submitted, and pompoms would be added to an online shopping cart.

for The Tivy cheerleading team, it doesn’t quite go like that.

instead, the team and coaches spend two months planning, reserve an afternoon at Scott Schreiner Golf Course and hold an 18-hole tournament.

for the only athletic team not funded by the Tivy athletic department, that’s just how it goes as the Lady Antlers held their 6th Annual Tivy Cheerleader Tournament on Monday at Scott Schreiner Golf Course.

with 110 golfers playing in the event, it was the largest field in the tournament’s history.

The tournament is the only fundraiser the team is allowed to do, which means the record turnout is a welcoming sign for rising junior and varsity cheerleader Celina Leyva.

“We have to buy our own uniforms, we have to buy new pompoms,” she said. “We do all the pep rallys and we need (things) for that.”

“Everything you see thrown at football games,” Alexie Fox added, “We have to buy those with our own money.”

at $80 per player, the group can use those funds to gas up the bus and possibly buy rain jackets for this season.

The fundraiser also had 130 different raffle prizes provided by local sponsors.

Republicans in action Monday

The Kerr County Republican Party held the bill Williams 2011 Golf Classic on Monday at Riverhill Country Club.

with the course covered with political signs, some of the Hill Country’s most prominent politicians took to the Byron Nelson-Joe Finger designed course.

The field had a nice turnout of 71 players. The $125 dollar registration fee went toward the party’s goal of raising $10,000 to $11,000 for its, and possibly independent, local and state candidates, said John Elliott, the Kerr County Republican chairman.

Elliott added that some of the proceeds also go to local charities.

The Powerbilt one looks better from my research.

Golf Games 101

There is a wide range of Golf Games available to buy for PC or to download free off the net. the golf games vary from high definition Flash games that provide jaw-dropping settings and movement simulation, to cute cartoons that kids will enjoy (even Pokemon play golf these days). Golf may seem an incredibly unlikely candidate for PC sport gaming success but every year new games are introduced into the market. Your typical game may look tame in comparison to other games available on the internet – there are no guns or explosions, no high speed chases or fast music but the expertise channeled into the production of golf games and the demand for divergent styles shows that golf games are exceedingly popular and a lucrative corner of the gaming market.

A game of real world golf can be played by a number of players, as can computer games. However, what makes it such a successful cross-over to the computer gaming market is that one of the most deeply satisfying elements of golf is not the competition between players, but the rewards of self-improvement, which can obviously be enjoyed by single gamers. Simulations, whether they use specialised hardware or can simply be played with any PC or mobile phone, will help beginners become familiar with golfing rules and terminology. for an experienced real world golfer they allow the opportunity to play against the best with the best equipment – who doesn’t want to beat Tiger Woods in Pro Golf with the best clubs? With computer golfing, this fantasy scenario can actually happen!

With many golf-related games (as with other sporting PC games), great care is taken with the appearance of players and locations, to give a strong sense of virtual reality (or virtual hyperreality – you can play golf quite convincingly in space these days!).Sure, simulations may not have the appeal of football or skateboarding when it comes to a youth market, but there is definitely a solid demand for new and exciting interpretations of golf games online. and as the average US gamer is 35 years old, having played video games for 12 years, one cannot expect the computer golfer to be of the same demographic as the actual world golfer, although no definitive statistics are available. Surely these games, to be so popular, are not being played only by people playing real golf – a tiny proportion of the population; people who earn in the highest tax bracket, who own property, who travel extensively. Men who wear suits to work every day and drive expensive cars. these are not the people creating a clamorous demand for computer golfing, surely!

So young people who enjoy the gratuitous action sequences and fast cutting of other PC games are also enjoying a round of golf at home. Whoever thought a chilled, old fashioned Sunday sport your grandfather played with his business partners would be something you now find your 10 year old playing on the latest, fastest TV console?

What are some good, cheap golf grips i could buy to regrip all my clubs. ?

The rubber grips on my clubs are not very good to my hands. They also slip a little at times if my hands get a little sweaty.

There are two things I never go cheap on. 1 is my driver shaft (its actually the motor, if you will, of the Driver) and 2 is my grips. They are my only means of connection to the club. Now on to the answer. Try WWW. Golfsmith.com its the end of the season clearance sale. There are several grips to choose from and they should have something in your price range that you like

I'm with the guy before me. I would never go cheap on my grips. But I have found a good type of grip and it doesnt give you blisters. its called the wind grip. They are nice grips and not to bad of a price.

Any golf supply store will offer a variety of golf grips. Consult with one of the pros who will advise or recommend the grip for you.

Lamkin Crossline…..cheap, about $1.60, great traction and last forever. You see pros playing them too.

Golf Pride Tour Velvet $2.15 each at Golf Galaxy

What is a GREAT golf course in the Phoenix/'valley of the sun'?

I am down here in Phoenix for a little while and would like to know (on opinion AND experience/stuck in your mind positively) of which one course is worth a special trip. I've heard of all the top golf courses in Phoenix and read many magazine/biased reviews (Troon, We-ko-pa, Gold Canyon, Grayhawk)…and there are MANY others…so, THAT is the dilemma, and a good dilemma at that. this is a special round because after this I head back home to where it is colder and won't touch a club for at least another two months.
However, I DON"T want to be swindled. I don't want to pay top dollar for a golf course and then realize it fell short of its price. I am 'reluctantly willing'/ financially wise to pay peak rates. I WANT a TRULY memorable golfing experience AND a place to recommend to my other business partners and friends when they come down here. Memorable as to mean everything from pulling up in the car to grabbing a beer at the 19th hole and tallying up the score. Unfortunately, I have no choice and will be playing by myself this time around, but that is not a concern.
Again, my big concern is paying top dollar for a prestigious course, but feeling like they just want my dollar. Obviously, no one wants that and I don't want that either.
Please, give me your helpful and friendly advice on a TRULY great course in the Phoenix area in terms of service, conditions, green maintenance, clubhouse/bar, and overall memorability. THANK YOU for your time and honest advice. :)

Golf Short Game Techniques – Read Only If You Want To Get Better

You want to find out good golf short game techniques for several reasons. one you want to get better, and two you are one of the few dedicated and amazing golfers that realize how to do it. That’s right, you realize the this part of the game is the easiest and best way to become a better golfer. you are one of the few, so congratulations. Alright enough talk, lets get down to the good stuff.

You want the best and greatest golf short game techniques. the only way I give you the best is to address the issue as to why people never practice. the reason is that it’s not fun. It’s tedious and hard work. It’s a lot more fun to pound a driver for an hour at the range and gain nothing from it. but you’re tired of doing that aren’t you? That’s why you are here, because you are willing to do the hard work because you want to be the best golfer you can be.

How do you do it though? how do you make the it fun? get excited about it, it all starts with your attitude. the best golf short game techniques I can give you is how to have fun with it. this means being a kid again. I was just recently teaching a junior clinic, and I miss being a kid. these kids have no idea how to hit a golf ball or anything about that, but they have the biggest smiles on their face after they make contact with the ball. They don’t care where it goes or how far they went, but they are super STOKED to just hit it.

So how does this help you? the thing I noticed the most about me, is that I get more excited about hitting a good drive than hitting a good chip shot. That’s the problem. we don’t give ourselves credit for what is important.

So next time you are out on the chipping green or playing, and you hit a good chip or pitch shot or putt, scream at the top of your lungs. fire yourself up. GET EXCITED!!!!

Haha, alright, you don’t have to get super out of control. but tell yourself good job, give a little fist pump for every good chip, pitch or putt. this will make you feel better about yourself, and that feeling is what you want and will drive you to practice more. and Practice makes Perfect.

This is the best golf short game techniques I can give you. is ways to fire yourself up.these are the golf short game techniques I used to go from an eight handicap to a four so I know this will help you.

How Many Wedges Should a Recreational Golfer Carry?

The short game is king, or so we are told by manufacturers who want us to buy their clubs. forty years ago, professional golfers carried two wedges. Now, most of them carry three, and four is not out of the question. how many wedges should you carry, and how do you decide?

Let’s look first at the wedges that are available to you, one by one, to see what each one does.

Your pitching wedge, which came with your set of irons, doubles as a fairway club and a pitching club. you can chip around the green with it, too. There’s no reason why you wouldn’t carry it and use it often.

Next up is the sand wedge, a traditional club. you use it to get out of the sand, of course, but its real value is in pitching from short distances. it can be the most versatile club in your bag, with no end to the shots you can play with it by varying how you set up.

The lob wedge. it gets the ball real high, real fast. it has less bounce than a sand wedge, so it’s safer to use off tight lies in the fairway. if you have to get over something and stop the ball in a hurry, this is your club. you can use standard setup and not have open the clubface to get extra loft, which is always risky.

Finally, the gap wedge. This wedge fills the gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge. Its purpose is to give you a 4-degree progression through your edges: 48-52-56-60 degrees. This would make it easy to hit a pitch any distance from 100 yards in and get the ball close. it would also allow for finer differences in chips right around the green, too. you would have four different shots with the same setup. That’s a big plus.

So. Which wedges should you put in your bag? Hale Irwin said he won three U. S. Opens carrying only one additional wedge, a 56-degree sand wedge. you might need only this one extra wedge, too, in the 54- to 56-degree range.

If you want to have a lob wedge, then a 48-54-60 progression makes sense. think before you add the fourth wedge, though. you will probably have to take out a club to make room, since the fourth wedge could put you over the 14-club limit. That would probably be one of your long irons that you don’t hit that often.

Though there are benefits of adding wedges, there are costs, too. you have to make an additional purchase, so there’s more dollars out of your pocket. you have to learn what the new wedge can do differently than you ones you already have, and that’s extra time at the range. Then look at how many strokes the new wedge will save you. if it’s one or two a round, by all means go for it. if it’s one or two a month, then practice more with the wedges you already have.
