Best Value golf clubs for a beginner?

I'm a beginner golfer looking to get a set of clubs I can use awhile, but won't break the bank.

I'm looking for complete set of clubs and a bag for somewhere in the 250-350 price range. Anywhere with special sales or discount codes would be great! even used clubs would be good (even though craigslist didn't have much and I wouldn't trust ebay for clubs).

I'm in the metro Detroit area and would be willing to drive a bit to find a good deal on some reputable clubs.

Any suggestions and guidance would be appreciated

Please don't just buy any set of clubs. You must buy a set of clubs that you feel comfortable with, otherwise their is no use of buying a set of clubs. Make sure that you hit a few balls with the clubs before buying any. Good luck on finding the right set of clubs, Golf is a great game.

Did you try to find any used sets? we have Roger Dunn Golf Shops here is southern California and they usually have plenty of complete sets in good condition. another source here is Play It again Sports. they have lots of locations.

What is th e meaning of "wire-to-wire" win in Golf games?

I was told a lot of times that some golf players made a wire-to-wire win of a game, but don't understand what's the meaning of "wire-to-wire win".
Thanks!

He/She led from first day to last day and won.

Much like a horse race when a horse jumps out for the lead and maintains it throughout the race to win, a player shoots the low score of the day for the first round of the tournament and leads after day 1.

The player then scores well enough to stay in first place through the rest of the tournament – thus "wire to wire" – and the winner.

leads all rounds

after round one the leader is the first to breast the tape [wire] and does the same after all 4 rounds hence wire to wire

Plaza qualifies for U.S. Amateur

If you’re going to be playing golf at Desert Hills golf course in the next couple of weeks, don’t be surprised if you see Gabe Plaza on the putting green with a lawnmower. He’ll be getting ready for the U.S. Amateur Championship, the pinnacle of worldwide amateur golf.

After a two-day score of 139 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Plaza on Wednesday qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be played on Aug. 22-28 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.though Plaza, 24, is reaching uncharted waters with his young golf career, he knows one thing about the U.S. Amateur Championship: He’s going to be putting on some fast greens.

“I work at Desert Hills, so I’m going to try and see if I can use one of our practice greens there. I’ll have to shave it down to the ground so I have something to practice on. That’s the idea; hopefully, I get permission.”

To his knowledge, Plaza is the first Yuma-based golfer to reach the U.S. Amateur Championship. And he did it in dramatic style.

Plaza shot a 68 on Tuesday to claim second place after the first day of action. Once he sank his final putt for a 71 on Tuesday, Plaza counted up his scorecard to find he would be entering a heads-up playoff with Luke Joy for Arizona’s third and final bid to the U.S. Amateur Championship.

The pair of golfers tied on the first playoff hole, but Plaza shot a par to Joy’s bogey to claim the final qualifying berth. Plaza said he was grateful he could share the experience with his uncle, Tony Plaza, who was also his caddie.

“The support is always the no. 1 thing that makes your game play well.”

While Plaza has made a name for himself in Yuma over the past few years, he’s playing the best golf of his life this summer. on June 26, Plaza shot a 61 at Yuma Golf & Country Club to set a new course record, his third local course record since 2006.

For now, Plaza said he will just try to keep his game sharp, while acknowledging the mental preparation will likely be his biggest focus.

“Everyone is qualifying from all over the world to go to play in that tournament. The best of the best is going to be there — and I’m one of them.”

Plaza plans to travel to Wisconsin a few days before the tournament to get used to the climate and the course. As someone who’s never traveled out of the Southwest to play golf, Plaza said he expects to encounter some drastic differences.

“I’ve only been in the desert, man,” Plaza said, laughing.

The Somerton native said he took extra pride in representing a city like Yuma. when considering the achievements of fellow Yuman Mieke Canan, who made the cut in the renowned U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links tournament in July, this has been an exciting summer for the Yuma golfing community.

“this is a big accomplishment for Yuma, that’s for sure,” Plaza said. “It’s something big that I feel really, really happy about.”

I'm a new golfer. What is the best golf magazine to subscribe to?

Definitely GolfDigest. the BEST golf magazine out there. It gives you tips and stories and everything else you could possibly ask for in a golf magazine. But if you are only looking for tips, then GolfTips would be for you. And the best place to get these magazines for cheap is eBay. You can get a 3 year subscription for under $10!

Sports Illustrated is my fav

golf digest, it has good tips

My advice is to use the money that you would spend on the subscription and put it toward a lesson, if you are looking for the magazine to be a teaching tool. If you just want to know what's going on in the world of golf, then GolfWeek is the way to go.

Golf Magazines are full of tips and solutions that most beginners or higher handicappers try to use too often. "Cure your slice with 3 simple drills" Sure, if that is the exact reason that you are slicing the ball. There are about 86 things that can cause the ball to slice. One drill might help 9 out of 10 people, but if you are that 10th person, you can do the drill all you want and you are still going to slice the ball. also, beginners have a tendency to over do the drills or do them incorrectly without realizing it. This ends up creating bad habits that take even longer to correct later on.

Go to the library and get the magazines for free if you really feel that you need to read them. There are millions of golfers out there, and no two swings are the same. get drills that are designed to help your specific needs from a professional that sees exactly what you are doing. Some of them might be the ones that come up in the magazines. others may be a variation of several drills that become suited specifically for you.

Also, starting out, it is important to get the proper fundamentals right off the bat. Even one or two sessions at the driving range alone at the beginning can groove bad habits.

Congratulations on picking up the game!!! It will bring you joy (and sometimes a little frustration) for the rest of your life.

Golf Digest for tips and golfworld for up to date stats.

golf magazine for $12 a yr 1 time a month

Both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest are good magazines. Golf Digest is more about the world of golf. If you are a new golfer i suggest Golf Magazine because it has more instruction articles and is more laid-back, fun to read. Golf Digest is too professional for me. also look in Golf Digest for a monthly swing sequence on a tour pro.

I currently subscride to Golf Digest and have enjoyed it from the get go. It does have a lot of good instruction tips from those just statring out to those that are 0-10 handicap. Golf Magazine is a very good mag too, but I gave the edge to Golf Digest because of their break 100,90, 80 articles, and swing break downs each month.

I'm a new golfer. What is the best golf magazine to subscribe to?

Any tips on focusing in junior golf tournaments?

i am a 13 year old boy and i am starting to do jr tourneys and i get a little nervous with the crowd watching me. how can i stay focused on my game not the audience?

Use an iPod.

At the age of 13 you start to get the experience of playing socially and during tournaments. the main thing to concentrate on during any golf game or practice session is your ROUTINE. I hope this helps.

Have a good one…

I taught my son from a young age and he played many jr tournaments and won many. State champion as a senior, WAC freshman player of the year and much more. That was to just show you I know what I am talking about. here is what you need to do.
Develop a routine and stick to it. when you are on the range practicing, don't just drag and hit the balls. Work on your routine also. Set a ball up ready to hit, then step behind it as you would on the course, pick your spot in front of the ball, align the club and hit it. Evaluate what the ball did and adjust. Then rinse and repeat.
What this does is you are developeing a routine that you can take to the course. when the pressure is on, you can then just think about your routine and nothing else, other than making a good swing. This will remove the crowd from your thoughts and focus you on the task at hand.
Develop your own routine and stick to it during practice. I am saying to be doing your routine 75% of the time you are practicing. Then when it is crunch time in a tourney you are ready and your routine will keep you focused on the task at hand.
If you need to work on your game or putting improvement, my son and I have written a book that will help you take it to the next level. Visit http://www.puttlightsout.com, enjoy
Hope that helps,
Steve

As Steve said, develop a routine and stick to it. Plan ahead and if something doesn't go according to plan, adjust. as you step up to the ball ask yourself what your target is and hit to your target.

ok… the comment about using an ipod is completely wack and stupid. unfortunately, the first few holes, you are gonna be nervous with the crowd and the tourney atmosphere. but the matter of the fact is, you are gonna get on with the tempo once you settle in. this will happen by 4th or 5th hole. you will be fine. and by 11th hole, you will realize that the crowds are just a part of the golf course. you will be comfortable in no time. and on the first tee, just swing away. lets get real… they don't have that much of an expectation from you. and they don't care about how you do. they only care about their sons and daughters. so know that they don't care and swing away! have fun and good luck!

You will be nervous on the first few holes, if not the first 8holes.

This is natural and is nothing to be worried about because the more tournaments you play you will start to keep yourself under control and won't be as nervous.

I have played in my clubs first team for 2seasons now, and in my first season I was as nervous as you will be.

Just by playing and learning to cope with pressure on putts to win the game etc will help alot.

You might even play better under pressure shots.

If you hit a bad tee shot on the 1st, that is nothing you can do and people are not going to judge you for it.

To stay focused on your game will be hard because you will always have the crowd on your mind. This is something that you will find in yourself over time.

There isn't anything better on the first tee than hitting a real good drive and more often than not you will like the crowd there to see them shots.

Good Luck

I was shaking while teeing no. 1infront of a large crowd during the first time I competed in a tournament. it was a 155-yard par 3. I was afraid that I might hit the ball thin, flat, or I might slice it.

I stepped back , closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. I convinced myself to be a show-off. as I stepped up to the ball, I pretended that I was shouting while whispering "Watch this shot.". it worked. I hit the green in one. I walked off the tee box smugly already holding a putter.

Also try to pretend that everyone in the gallery knows nothing about golf.

Good luck in your tourneys.

Enjoy the attention while walking to the tee/ball and then have a style to prepare tfor the shot.

Some of the big names have a little thing the say to themselves. "grip it right", "just like on the driving range", "eye on the ball" … whatever that will bring you back to the job at hand and ignor the crowd … or that playing partner that rips the velcro on their glove as you go for your backswing.

What is a good beginner golf club set?

So I am 22 and starting to get into golfing. I went once and really enjoyed it and also I feel it is a good skill to have for a business major in college. so my question is what is a good complete golf set to buy within the price range $350 or lower.

Taylormade Burner 2.0 iron set and for R11 driver you also need a taylormade ghost putter that should cost about 1200

TaylorMade R11 Driver.

Head for a sporting good store (like Academy) and take a look at what they have. If you find you really like golf and play a lot you can get a better set later. You will need other gear too….waterproof shoes are great, glove, balls, tees, towel.

I got the hot ticket for you right here – everything you need except balls. Some of the sets are even on sale right now for an unbelievable price. These are good quality clubs too.
http://www.theaceofclubs.com/starter_gol…

Here are a couple I hear good things about, have a look they are all under $350

http://www.golfsmith.com/products/TF110/…
http://www.golfsmith.com/products/XPC100…
http://shop.golf.com/club/profile/club-s…

check out golfmart.com

buy used iron sets that are still current models. for under 200$

dont buy forged or blade clubs. there are harder to hit and are for more advance players.
you cant go wrong with anything else since you are just starting out.

for a little more money you can get a nice pre owned set
http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/iron…

but if you want to stick to your 350$ limit i recommend
http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/i…

has everything you need. driver, irons, bag, putter.

you just need to buy golf shoes and ball and glove.

I recommend footjoy. shoes are expensive though.

glove. doesnt matter what brand.

balls. something with a hard cover.
pinnacle gold or noodle. only like 20$

its an expensive sport. but it lasts a life time and over the years you can always upgrade your stuff.

enjoy! and stick with it! its very frustrating!

Top-Flite XL 13-Piece Complete Golf Club Set are my first set of golf clubs and I am very pleased with them. while I don't have any point of reference other than the clubs I have been renting from the club house, I believe the quality and durability of these clubs is very high. I have worked with each club and found them all to work well though I tend to favor the 7 iron. The putter is a little funny looking but well balanced. Also, the bag is very comfortable to carry and has enough pockets and pouches to carry everything you will need when starting out. I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend this set to anyone that is just starting out.

Go to D*cks website and look on there. Walter Hagen MS2 is good (I bought it for my first set and loved it), Maxfli and Wilson would be great too (Wilson probably the best). But read the reviews and go to a store and look at it and see if it feels right for you. any other golf store would be good.

You can look for golf clubs online, i recommend the online golf shop http://www.golfshopshopping.com, you may find golf clubs at you price range.
