Carnoustie-Angus, The Town Famous For Golf

The seaside town of Carnoustie – Angus, located by the side of the North Sea, approximately 42 miles from City of Edinburgh and about 10 miles from the City of Dundee. it sits on the border of two parishes, Panbridge and Barry. there are two streams that run through the town, the Barry Burn on the West side of town and the Craig mill burn on the East side.

With a population of around 10,000, makes it the fourth largest of the towns in the region of Angus. during the 18th and 19th centuries most of the employment came from textiles or agriculture. Today it is known as being a seaside and golfing town.

Running along the side of the town, is the Dundee to Arbroath railway line which opened in 1838. The railway encouraged industrial growth in the area and was the main reason the vitriol factory opened. The products were used in fertiliser used by agriculturists.

The towns name is thought to be of Gaelic origins, although there does not appear to be a Gaelic equivalent for the name. Some people believe that the name comes from the Scottish Craws Nestie, which relates to number of crows that populate the area.

Remains show there has been a population since the New Stone Age period, which can be evidenced by the monuments that can be found around the town. although there are also remains in around dating back to Bronze age, Medieval and Pictish periods.

Famous for golf, the game has been played in the area since the 16th century. there are three picturesque golf courses in the area, one of which is well known for hosting international championships. there is also a rugby club, which plays for a league that the Scottish Rugby Union operates. there is also a junior football team.
