Fairway Wood Instructions-Tips for Tough Lies

Using a fairway wood from challenging lies, can be difficult at times, for this reason, some golfers choose to avoid this club. The three wood is the longest club in your bag after the driver, so avoiding it\’s use would mean you are sacrificing some distance, and perhaps the chance to hit shorter iron shots into the green.

Golf shots with Irons are most effective when the ball is struck on a downward stroke at impact, whereas fairway woods, utilize a sweeping type motion that strikes the golf ball as the club moves parallel to the ground.

When you practice this technique, try to take a wide stance, just the same as you would with the driver. Position the golf ball opposite the left heel, spread your weight evenly and comfortably on the balls of your feet.

Start the golfswing on a low path that almost skims the grass, and try to repeat that shallow path on your downswing. Try to remember, keep your right shoulder level with the ground and pull through with your left hand.

Keep your upper torso behind the golf ball, maintain head position, and be sure to extend your arms toward the target in your follow through.

Trying to assist the ball into the air won\’t help. Don\’t feel that you need to try, the 3 wood isn\’t meant to go sky high, just keep the club head on an even track through the impact zone. The fairway woods and the three wood have enough loft to send the golfball on it\’s way.

To play the high golf shot, where say, you need to go over water or need more loft, play the golf ball a bit further forward in your stance and drop your hands slightly at the address position. Try to place a little extra weight over your back foot by leaning your spine away from your target.

Utilize these position alterations to enable a better swing to sweep the ball off the fairway, and at the same time add some loft to the shot.

To hit a golf shot with a lower, piercing ball flight, just do the opposite. Meaning, place the golf ball where you would normally play a mid iron from, it\’s about 2 ball widths back towards the middle of your stance, then place more weight onto your front leg.

Changing your set-up in this way will help you to take the loft off the club at impact and produce a much lower ball trajectory which will assist the golf ball to run up to and onto the green

It is much more preferred to adjust your stance, than to alter your swing to hit different shots with your fairway woods, especially when trying to produce different ball flights. Changing your stance is simpler, safer and more beneficial than trying to alter your swing for every shot.

Fairway Wood Instructions to hit 3-wood from a tight lie:

1. Play your ball back of your stance

2/ Sweep the ball off of the fairway

3. Strike your ball with a descending blow

4. Adjust your weight to your lead side

5. Swing through your golf ball

Adjusting your stance, not your swing is the key to hitting different shots successfully with your fairway woods, and dropping strokes from your game, these tips will help you achieve the lofts you need.

Remembering these few things, like don\’t expect to hit that perfect shot, it may never happen, so just relax, don\’t allow stress and tension to creep into your game. Always tee up on the same side of trouble, hitting away from it, aim for a clear and definite target in the distance. Please don\’t stress about hitting it long, focus on your accuracy then in time distance will come.
