Golf Chipping Tips
It cannot be expressed enough the importance of learning how master the chip shot. This article will give you some solid golf chipping tips that if you master will greatly improve your scores and thus your enjoyment of the game.
Let’s begin with the disclaimer that there are many types of chips you can make when you get close to the green. In other words, there is no single approved method for getting the ball closer to the hole. The effectiveness of your chipping will depend on the lie you have, the length of the grass, how far you are from the hole, and the condition of the green.
We will begin our golf chipping tips with the standard chip. This is when you are close to the green but not on it. Typically, this shot is played with either a wedge or your nine iron, depending on your comfort level with the club. The general rule of thumb is that a solid chip will go about 1/3rd of the way to the hole and then roll the rest of the way. You want to play this shot in the center of your stance with your hands placed well ahead of the ball and your club face square to the hole.
Next, let’s take a close look at what is termed the soft shot. Generally, you want the ball to fly farther and then land softly close to or preferably into the cup. The lob wedge is the most common club used for this soft chip shot, however you can use a sand wedge.
When doing the soft shot, address the ball with your club face open slightly. Make sure that you play the ball forward and that you keep your hands behind it during your swing. You must learn how to accelerate the club head for this shot to work correctly. If done correctly, the ball will go high for just a short distance, then land very softly and roll slightly (hopefully in the cup).
If there is a lot of green between you and the hole, you might try the low chip shot. This shot is normally done with a mid-iron, such as the six- or seven-iron. You must play the ball toward the back of your stance to get the descending type of impact you need. Again, keep your hands ahead of the club head and the club face square to the target.
You must remember that this chip shot is going to have the greatest amount of roll once it lands on the green. Usually, you will want to play this where you can aim right at the hole and stop the short of the hole or right around the hole thus avoiding going into a sand trap or water hazard that will be on the other side of the hole.
Most of all, the best golf chipping tip that I can give you is to practice regularly using all of your chipping clubs from your mid-irons to your wedges. Each one of them requires its own setup and particular swing. The only way to master all of these options is to visit the range often and put them to work for you.
The best way to practice is to start with the standard chip shot, then move to the soft chip shot. This should take up most of one day. After you have mastered these shots, then go on to the low trajectory shot. It may take you a little longer to master this, but it is well worth the time invested.
If you put these golf chipping tips to work, you will master your short game and lower your score. Keep practicing and be very patient with yourself. Good Luck.
