Golf In Gran Canaria – When To Go? Where To Play?

Off the northwest coast of Africa, in the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean, rest the Canary Islands. This chain is an autonomous archipelago of Spain and enjoys a robust tourism industry. Gran Canaria is the second most populous island in the chain and maintains a healthy tourist trade of its own. One of the main sources of this income is the island’s golf courses. Golf has long been a favorite sport of those looking to enjoy a sunny day while testing their skills on the links. In recent years, golf has risen dramatically in popularity, and many people take in the sights and experience of golf on Gran Canaria. When should you go? Where should you play?

As far as when to go, there is not a bad time to hit the links, really. The weather is favorable all year long, and that allows golfers to get in a round whenever they get the urge to do so. If you are looking to achieve a more peaceful setting, however, then the winter months are the time to go because this is essentially the area’s off season. Not as many vacationers and tourists are there during this period. Summer will bring more golfers to Gran Canaria, and that can lead to longer waits between shots more often than not.

Gran Canaria is home to the oldest golf club in all of Spain, and new players as well as experts enjoy a round on its course. Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas was inaugurated in December of 1891 and was the brainchild of Mackenzie Ross. Its green landscape rests comfortably at the foot of an extinct volcano, and this majestic mountain provides a panoramic view to golfers during play. The course is an 18-hole, par 71 adventure and there are instructors on site to help improve your game. A swimming pool and tennis courts also call the club home.

The Professional Senior and Women’s Spanish Championships, as well as other tournaments, have been held at El Cortijo Club de Campo, an 18-hole, par 72 course that opened in 2000. Though it possesses a short lifespan, it is already a favorite of the courses located on Gran Canaria. It was designed by Blake Stirling and Marco Martin with an eye toward a varied experience. Six tee locations are provided on each hole, and there is a golf school, putting green, and bunker practice area that allows players to hone their skills.

Oasis Golf provides a fun round for those who have not been playing the game all that long. It is a small scale American-style course that carries a par of 54, enabling those working on their games a chance to encounter the typical golf course hazards without too much pressure. Las Palmeras Golf offers novices an 18-hole, par 3 course in order to hone their skills. With this variety of courses, it is no wonder that golf is rather popular in Gran Canaria.
