New To Golf? Here Is What You Need To Know
Golf is a great sport. It is a game of skill, and playing it is both an enjoyable physical and mental challenge. Like any other game, golf follows certain rules. They are complicated though and it’s out of the scope of any one article to explain all of them clearly. The basic of Golf, again, as with any other sport, is to uphold the spirit of sports and that is fairness. The game is supposed to be played fair and square and sportsmanship has to be upheld.
Taking the right equipment to the course is being mindful of both rules and proper etiquette. Golf’s rule book places a limit of fourteen clubs in each bag. There is actually no minimum number of clubs to bring along. Just make sure you don’t borrow clubs from other players because it is not allowed in most circumstances, and is scorned upon.
You’ll find several types of clubs among which wood, wedges, putters and iron are common. Each of them has a specific purpose. For the initial shots, when you require a lot of power and a lot of distance, wood clubs are perfect. If the ball has gone to the greens, you’ll have a hard time sending it back to the course. This is when irons come handy. Putters have loft angles less than 10 degrees, and are thus a good choice for shots which require just rolling the ball along the grass. Wedges have the greatest loft angles among the four, and as such produce the most spin on the ball, making it “bite” the green upon impact.
Prior to 1935, golf clubs with wooden shafts were the norm. They were replaced by steel clubs because apart from being frail, they proved difficult for golfers to master being that you’d have to use a different swing for each club. These were a lot more consistent in their performance, being stronger and easier to grip. Graphite or composite shafts were introduced in the 1970 but gained widespread use only in the 1990s and is not the ubiquitous choice among golfers. As is apparent, clubs have evolved over the years. They have become better and lighter. However, steel shafts are a lot more accurate. These days, golfers invest on golf club custom fitting to better their game. These are better in many ways since they are personalized to your needs. If you live in Surrey, you have a number of options, there are a multitude of Surrey golf club specialists to refer to.
