Playing Golf with Wedges
It’s hard for someone who has never golfed to understand why there are so many different clubs. Even if you’re a novice golfer you surely know there is a difference in your golf clubs; a huge difference in fact. The more dissimilar pieces of golf equipment in your golf bag are your golf wedges.
Wedges have shorter handles than the other clubs in your golf bag. This is so you can get closer to your golf ball and give it higher than other shots. In general, golf wedges are for shorter shots (less than 100 yards) since you’re trying more for loft than distance and aim. You probably have a number of different wedges but let’s examine the use of the two more common wedges used when playing golf – the pitching wedge and the sand wedge.
The pitching wedge’s primary purpose is to get the ball up in the air so distance is not as important as height. For this reason you should be close to the green and use this wedge to get the ball on the green and close to the cup. If you get the ball in the cup then it’s a bonus.
As the name implies, the sand wedge is designed primarily to get your golf ball out of a sand trap or other sticky situations. The club is designed to give your ball a great amount of loft (about 75 degrees if properly struck) so you can get it out of the sand or over trees. A sand wedge can be used in place of a pitching wedge if the ball is fairly close to the green. This is because you get more loft than distance with the sand wedge; even more than the pitching wedge.
Whichever wedge you choose, be careful not to blade the ball. Blading the ball is done when you hit the ball closer to the center. Not only will you not get loft to the ball but you’ll probably also hit the ball farther than your intended target.
A sand or pitching wedge can be used in place of a chipping wedge which is used to get the ball on the green from not so difficult locations. The chipping wedge gives you some loft but also some aim so you can attempt to get your ball in the cup. To use the sand or pitching wedge you’ll need to adjust your stance and swing but it’s possible.
In any case, you should experiment with different wedges when you practice. Try out different turfs and hitting the ball different distances. You’ll see which ones are best for which situations.
