A Champion Golf Family

Most people come to Pinehurst to play championship courses having already learned the game.

The thousand or so families who have come from around the world to play in the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship this week are no exception — except for the Kane family.

A local family, Sean and Julia Kane moved to Pinehurst from Tennessee four years ago on a military transfer. I met with them at Mid Pines over lunch to learn about their two protégé sons, Conlan, 8 years old, and Garrett, 6 years old, after their first round in the U.S. Kids.

Julia was quick to tell me how instrumental Pinehurst was in inspiring Conlan to take up the game.

“As we drove through town, Conlan would point at each golf course we passed along the way and say, ‘I want to play there!’” she says. “He always wanted us to drive down Midland Road, ‘the golf course road,’ to get home. He bugged us so much that we decided to get him golf lessons from Dale Briggs at Knollwood when he was 4 years old. the rest is history. it was his fascination with the Pinehurst courses, not us, that inspired him to play golf.”

Garrett, his younger brother, saw Conlan’s passion for the game which also included his watching the Golf Channel, reading golf books and watching videos like “The History of Pinehurst.”

“He’s watched that video so many times that he could give tours of Pinehurst himself,” Julia notes.

Seeing Conlan’s all-out-love for the game sparked Garrett to say to his parents, “I want to do that!”

While golf is a lifestyle for Conlan, Garrett likes it in part because of his older brother’s interest and because he likes anything he can win at. Sean and Julia’s involvement in golf is “because of them.”

This week, both brothers had the chance to tee it up on the golf course road.

Garrett shot an opening round 39 at Midland Country Club. the 1,300-yard course for the 6-year-olds played about 800 yards shorter than Conlan’s track at Mid Pines, where Conlan shot 47, two shots behind fellow local, Colin Dutton.

I asked each brother about his best first-round shot.

Garrett remarked, “My best shot was hitting a sand wedge on the eighth hole to about two or three feet. it was a great rescue shot. I did birdie the sixth hole, a par-5.”

Conlan was next: “My best shot was hitting a hybrid over a tree. I was 91 yards from the pin and in the pine straw. I thought it was going to go in the bunker, but it cleared the tree and the bunker, landing on the green.”

Both Player of the Year winners on the local Myrtle Beach tour, they were upbeat in their attitude for the next day’s round, largely due to their parents’ philosophy.

“Golf is a game and it needs to remain fun for the kids,” Sean says. “While there is a lot of pressure in this world championship because it is played at the next level with officials, scorekeepers, and other professional elements, it is still a game and they are still kids.”

It appears the Kanes have discovered a formula for success in the early stages of their sons’ competitive trajectory: play golf within a fun family atmosphere, give their kids space to develop their own interests and passions, and keep nurturing their kids’ love for the game.

Rapping up the interview, I asked Garrett a few remaining questions:

“How do you get over a bad shot?” His response: “I recover!”

“Who is the better player?” He replied, “We’re still trying to decide.”

I thought, “Diplomatic at 6. That’s great.”

I continued, “What’s your game plan for tomorrow?” “Play well and have fun!” Garrett said with a big smile on his face.

While I was impressed with these boys’ attitudes and obvious giftings, my attention turned toward the healthy perspective on competition instilled in them by their parents.

As they headed off to go swimming for the afternoon, all I could think was, “Your kids may have found golf going down the golf course road. you, however, are raising them in such a way as to find the path to life through their sport and focus on the family in it.”

As a performance coach I always say, “All true championship begins and ends in the home.”

Well done, Sean and Julia. Well done.

I live in Georgia and I'm looking for inexpensive golf lessons for beginners. Anyone know of any?

Check into your state/local USGA sections. Out here in CA there are free lessons for members covering a ton of different aspects of the game (IE, one day is wedges, another is putting, another might be irons and still others are for Driver, sand, etc.) VERY COOL

One of the first things that I would do would be to buy and read Harvey Penick's Books. the are very informative and you will learn something about golf, but more important you will learn golf courtesy. Lots of courses have clinics that are fairly inexpensive but you are in a class with several people, but you should get enough knowledge of the basics to practice and master to keep you busy for a lifetime.

Golf Lessons – Is it Live Or is it Memorex?

When it comes to golf lessons, you have a lot of choices. Private one-on-one lessons with a pro are probably best, but they are very expensive and usually not very convenient. You can purchase golf lessons on DVD so that you can watch them at your leisure. The downside of the DVDs is you have to watch the same lesson over and over. It may be a golf lesson that can help you, but if it is one that doesn’t really fit your game or trouble areas, you are just stuck with it.

Golf Lessons on video that are available on the internet have many distinct advantages. Almost all of them are absolutely free. there are new lessons being added every day. Many of them incorporate slow motion and stop motion so that you can easily see the different swing positions the instructor is trying to teach. Some of he instructors are very good teaching pros. I found many very good examples of an online video golf lessons.

Now there are some really poor quality golf lesson videos out there too. so you may have to weed your way through them to find the good ones. Once you find a keeper, just be sure to bookmark it in your internet browser so you can easily go back to it again and again.

Every article in my website contains an online golf lesson video. I keep adding new ones every few days too. You are sure to find one that floats your boat.

How to Perfect Golf Swing?

Hi, I am wanting to work on improving my golf swing. Should I get lessons or what about any of the golf instruction you can find online or both?

Thanks

Hello. Golf is an awesome game but can be frustrating to learn as you continue to get better which is lifelong of course.

It's good you're asking about the golf swing b/c that is most fundamental if you want to improve your scores.

Golf lessons is recommended- in a 30-60 minute session a pro can really help you iron out kinks and tweak parts of your swing that you may not know need fixed. however, they can get costly depending on where you go.

There are many great products and tutorials that offer golf tips both free and paid. one such that I found useful is the Simple Golf Swing. In fact we've done a review of the course here – http://www.golf-made-simple.com/simple-g… – it may be just what you need to get started for less money.

All in all learn as much as you can, but take action with each new thing you learn.

Hope that helps,

Joe

The key to a good swing is the basics. The basics aren't rocket science. You could go to a pro and get lessons but if you don't wont to spend the money you could easily find something useful online.
First and formost focus on having the correct grip (google golf grip). second make sure you understand what a correct stance is. Then make sure that you always practice with the correct alignment to the hole. I can't stress this enough. Simply walking on to the driving range and hitting balls 'willy-nilly' at a target is a big no-no. always put a club down on the ground which helps you align yourself correctly with the target. Your club should be aiming straight at the target while your feet should be directly at 90 degrees to the target/club face. put down a club so that your feet are aligned slightly to the left of the target (if youa are right handed). I hope you can understand that, but put simply everything should be parrallet to the target. If you get into the habit of not focussing on the basics, you will develop bad habbits and if you ingrain a bad habbit into your game it can often be irreversable.
I believe once you have mastered the basics (grip, stance, alignment) its all go from there. Don't get to technical there after. Often people get 'over-coached' and turn into 'robots' with no feel or adaptability. You need to find a natural swing and rythm that suits you. always remember that the aim is to hit the ball into the hole, not to have the perfect swing.
Conquer the basics and let your imagination do the rest.

try the red heat golf trainer

lessons do help.
However, the most common problem with beginners is that they almost always have a bad grip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmK07gRcV…

Try to fix that and then go back to the range and (practicing your new grip) start hitting sand & pitching wedges with a half swing and slowly moving to the full swing. You will see an amazing difference in the way you hit. after hitting several hundred balls you will start to feel more comfortable with the swing.

Also (MOST IMPORTANT!) DO NOT HIT YOUR DRIVER when you are learning the golf swing. most new players go hit the driver because it can go the furthest (DON'T!) it will build some very bad habits that are tough to cure. Patience! practice the golf swing described above using the 9 and 7 iron and you should seem some results pretty quickly. after several thousand balls have been hit (accurately), you can try learning how to fade and draw the ball. after another several thousand balls you can go to the driver. If you have built a consistent swing, you will be able to hit the driver no problem, but don't touch it until you've mastered the swing. The last thing you want to do is have two different swings for hitting the irons and the driver.

If you can afford to have both lesson and read online instruction that would be much better to perfect that swing.

Also remember: Practice always makes things perfect.

Here is an article named How to swing your irons. Hope this helps

How To Use Long Putters

A common putting flaw I see in my golf lessons is excessive wrist action. Increased wrists leads to a loss of control of the putterhead before impact and an abundance of missed putts. with greens in better condition these days, the need for precision in putting has grown. In other words, you must overcome this putting flaw to achieve a lower golf handicap. Enter the long putters.

Long putters curb wrist action by anchoring the putter to a fixed point–your stomach or your sternum. While I prefer a regular putter to a long one. I encourage players who take my golf lessons to use whichever putter works for them. I also encourage them to learn the proper technique using a long putter, which I described in my golf tips.

Three broad categories of putters exist: regular, long, and extra long. Regular (or the standard length) putters measure 33 to 36 inches long. Long putters (or mid-length) putters measure 38 to 45 inches. And extra-long putters measure from 46 to 52 inches or so. most long putters have split grips. try several types before choosing one.

Once you’ve selected a putter, you need to learn how to hit it. below are some golf tips on hitting long and extra-long putters.

The extra long putter takes wrist action almost completely out of play, replacing it with a fixed center (sternum) around which your putterhead moves. with the extra long putter you need to think pendulum. The sweeping pendulum-like stroke needed with an extra long putter is more consistent than the stroke required for a regular length putter. Plus, the club is easier on the back than a regular length putter. however, the extra long putter does have a weakness–lack of distance control.

To use the long putter, place your top hand at the top of the putter’s grip and place the grip against your sternum. You can grip the club with the other hand as you normally would. or, you can try another grip. Some players hold the shaft like a pencil. Others hold the shaft between the curled index finger and middle fingers of the right hand. either way works as long as the top of the shaft ends at about the height of the logo on your shirt when you’re in a slightly upright putting stance and the putter’s sole is resting on the ground.

You have two ways to applying force with a long putter–bending and straightening of the right arm or rocking motion your shoulders. Some players prefer to bend and straighten their right arms (for right-handers). Others prefer to rock their shoulders back and forth. whichever method you choose, it’s essential keep the upper body still so it can act as the fulcrum around which the pendulum- like swing moves.

Mid-length putters are 10 to 12 inches longer than a regular putter and have either an extended grip or a split one. with this type of putter having the right length club is critical. The putter should extend to about three inches beyond your belly button when you’re standing in the upright position. Your height and body shape will determine the exact length for you.

Using a mid-length putter is a lot like using a regular putter except, of course, for anchoring the putter to your mid-section–which provides the foundation for your swing. The anchored shaft stabilizes the club around the hinge point, taking the wrist out of play. You’re options for putting the ball are the same as with the long putter. User either your right arm to pull and push the club or your shoulders to provide a smooth, rhythmic swing.

Both the long putter and the extra-long putter are viable alternatives to a regular length putter. Both minimize wrist action when hit properly and both need a stable anchor point to be effective. Both they also require you to learn a new a putting technique to hit them properly. but learning a new putting technique is only the first step in using these putters. You still need to practice with them every chance you get, if you want to lower your golf handicap.

How to Create a Better Internal Linking Structure for Your Blog

It is important for your position in the search engines to have a nice and neat internal link structure. This article will provide some advice on how you can build effective internal links.

There are many smaller considerations such as controlling the flow of PR, or page rank, and restricting them from certain pages. You do not want to waste valuable page rank power for your terms of use (TOS), contact form page and other admin use pages. Most of the time you should try to minimize the number of those pages and ensure that the page rank is passed on to more important pages on your blog. The website for golf lessons offer you a great deal of facility for reading blogs regarding golf lessons.

Never let the error pages of your blog be wasted when they can be efficient.

Summarize Your Activity: You can also include a summary of your posting activity in an article you post weekly or monthly that features short descriptions and links to all your latest content. This gives you another chance to add some highly relevant internal links, making it easy for your existing readers to catch up on content they might have missed and at the same time help your new subscribers find your high quality content without having to search around. By creating a link summary, you not only drive more traffic to some of your older articles but you will also be able to get search engines to notice your better posts. You should always be looking for other ways to link to older posts.

You should include a link to older posts in any text that you have that is even slightly related.

Last but not the least; try adding internal links to the first few paragraphs of your blog post as it can help you increase the click through rates from RSS readers as Leadbetter Academy has done. Your blog should offer your readers excellent content, great organization and easy navigation. All the links you have on your blog should provide your users with a means to reach more interesting and valuable articles.

Golf Lessons – A FAQ For Beginners Learning Golf For the First Time

Golf lessons for beginners don’t come cheap. You need to squeeze as much as you can out of your golf trainer in the short time you spend with him. Here are some common tips, questions and answers which can help you wring the maximum benefit from your golf lessons.

1. How do I find the best golf trainers or golf lessons for beginners?

The best way is to ask for a recommendation from a friend whose opinion you trust. if you can’t do this, try asking at your local golf club or golf shop. worst comes to worst, you can look in the Yellow Pages or buy a DVD course from Amazon (Remember to read the customer reviews before you buy).

2. How much does a golf lesson cost?

Rates run around $40-$50 an hour. some locations are more expensive, e.g. Chicago pros charge around $100 an hour. this varies from pro to pro. if price really matters to you, you may be better off buying a DVD course or online course.

3. Should I get my clubs custom fitted before going for my golf lessons?

Opinions here are divided. My answer: if you don’t even know how to play golf, the answer is “No”. Custom fitting only benefits you once you develop a repeatable and consistent swing. However, pick up the phone and ask your golf trainer – if he has a different opinion then you should go with his advice.

Regardless, you should get your clubs re-gripped, especially if you are using hand-me-downs or second-hand clubs. Having the correct sized grips helps you to hold the club firmly. more than one player has found his persistent slice or hook mysteriously cured once he fixed his grip.

4. Do I need to tip my golf trainer?

That depends – how much did you get out of your golf lessons? One thing to remember is that most pros only take home 50% to 70% of what you pay them. The rest goes to the golf course or school. In a sense, they are very much like taxi drivers and waiters.

5. Should I get golf swing instructions A) from a pro; or B) from a certified golf instructor?

Theoretically, the certified golf instructor is trained to teach golf swing lessons, while the pro is someone who showed he knows how to play well. However, see the answer to question #1 – in practice, who cares whether your golf trainer is certified or not as long as he can teach you well!

6. I’m left-handed. Should I look for a left-handed instructor?

Not necessarily. Note that many left-handed golfers actually play right-handed. Courses are normally set up for right-handed play, and left-handed clubs are often more expensive.

7. How many golf lessons do I need?

That really depends on how quickly you learn. more importantly, if you have the choice, try to space out your lessons – once per month should give you enough time to practice on your own.

After you complete your beginner’s lessons, you should strongly consider scheduling follow-up lessons with your golf trainer. There are two main reasons for this:

  • Many week-end golfers tend to pick up bad golf habits over time. their golf swing techniques slowly become develop mistakes and they play worse and worse. Follow-up lessons will help you to arrest the slide in your game.
  • For those of you who actually manage to get a lot of practice in, you’ll find your skill hitting a plateau. Follow-up lessons will allow your golf instructor to teach you additional skills, for example how to hit a fade or draw, and how to control the spin of your ball. All of these will give you better accuracy in your swing.

The preceding frequently asked questions on golf lessons should help most beginners get more bang for the buck.

Online Golf Lessons – Consistency!

Online golf lessons are key to mastering this game without spending a fortune on coaches. what, however, can you learn from these sorts of lessons? Well, everything form how to hit massive drives to an intelligent short game, to longer putts that actually make it into the hole and don’t dramatically raise your score. although online golf lessons are definitely key, consistency is what you’re after.

If you’re 70 or so yards from the hole and you know you can hit that distance with a certain iron, you want to be able to actually hit that distance when you pick up that iron. you don’t want your 6 or 7 iron to hit the ball sometimes 20 yards farther and sometimes 20 yards closer. Actually knowing and understanding how far each club hits for you is one of the big keys to using golf lessons (or any training for that matter) to help lower your score and better your game.

As far as these golf lessons, let’s look at a few easy tips that will allow you to consistently crush the ball and also to consistently drive the same distances with your irons.

Online Golf Lessons: Consistency Tips

1. it all starts with posture. you must learn to stand in an easy stance of knees bent, back slightly bent, feet perpendicular to the direction of the flight of the ball, and most of your weight on your heels. You’ll need to practice this stance. Online golf lessons can tell you what to do, they just can’t do it for you.

2. As you rotate your hips and swing the club, your body does not change overall position. you don’t swing your hips, nor do you straighten your back except at the end of the shot.

3. what makes the ball go the farthest is the rotation of your hips times with the swing. One of the most important aspects of these online golf lessons is learning to clear the front of your body out of the way, as you rotate through the swing. Do this right and you’ll deliver an enormous amount of power to the swing.

4. Make sure you don’t take your eyes off the ball! even after it’s hit, keep looking at the grass where the ball was.

5. Don’t try to crush the ball. Implement these online golf lessons and let skill carry your ball, not brute strength.

6. Learn your clubs. Don’t just read these online lessons and go to the course. The driving range is your friend. there you can really learn your clubs.

7. Stretch prior to playing golf. and during your game. Look for good stretches that we recommend for online golf lessons. use these and increase your range of motion.
