Beautiful B.C. golf

I was walking the back nine at Shaughnessy Thursday following young guns Adam Hadwin, Matt Hill and former RBC Canadian Open champion Billy Andrade when I got a tweet from NBC Sports’ Ryan Ballengee about Shaughnessy.

‘Lovin’ it on television. great classic track.’

I’ve said this before but it bears repeating again. I’ll put Canada’s best courses up against any country in the world including the United States. that might seem overly nationalistic but I’ve been fortunate and privileged to play in a number of countries. that said I know what we have here and it’s beyond special.

Take Thursday afternoon. Along with Golf Management Institute head man Grant Fraser and Hal Quinn of Quinn Communications we left Shaughnessy in the late afternoon and drove to West Vancouver for a round at Capilano, Stanley Thompson’s pacific jewel. As I said on Twitter, I have no words. why? Because Capilano left me speechless. All I will say 24 hours later: Capilano’s brilliance is etched in Thompson’s genius and vice versa. There’s no experience like it anywhere. To get it on my personal list of courses was a highlight on this trip.

Time on the Left Coast has actually been spotty for me at best over the past number of years. That’s why it was great to be in the western province for a sustained period of time the past few days where playing golf was as much a part of my agenda as watching the best players in the world.

Coming in Saturday and right to Predator Ridge I got an early indication of what the next few days had in store. having not been at Predator since 2005 I was amazed at how much the Vernon-based destination has grown since being there last. Along with a new multi-million dollar spa, new lodge and housing development, Doug Carrick’s Ridge Course is one of his best layouts, a test of golf attractive for anyone who loves challenge, bold scenery, a great routing and exceptional shot values. Predator’s status as one of the best golf destinations in Canada is undeniable.

For me it was great to renew acquaintances with Tobiano, Tom McBroom’s course near Kamloops, a Canadian golf destination vastly underrated and underserved for those who love the game. There’s so much great golf amid this area of British Columbia it’s hard to know where to start. Tobiano though is clearly the highlight of the region. PGA Tour player Duffy Waldorf and his family loved their time there and Masters Champ Charl Schwartzel and former Open Champion Louie Oosthuizen are heading to Tobiano immediately after the Canadian Open. It’s fun, boldly challenging and backdropped by an amazing setting. It doesn’t get much better in Canada letalone British Columbia.

I’m going to reserve comment on Richard Zokol’s Sagebrush for a future blog but of the new Canadian Hall of Famer’s 18-hole layout I can only say this: there is no modern course I’ve played that classifies as a more compelling experience or exercise in the nuances of traditional golf. It’s Canada’s Bandon Dunes squared.

The Golf Journalists Association of Canada held its annual writing awards and golf day earlier this week at Marine Drive, an A.V. Macan layout tweeked by architect Jim Urbina. the association could not have chosen a better host. Set along the Fraser River it was great to play this classic B.C. course that has produced the likes of Zokol, Doug Roxburgh and Eugene Wong. It’s not long and doesn’t have to be. Marine Drive is a tight, shot-making championship test and a delight to go around. I’d do it again today.

Having walked around Shaughnessy the past couple of days I can attest to its difficulty but am more intrigued by its movement of land and the routing A.V. Macan created. the best players on the PGA Tour are loving being here this week including Ernie Els, Jim Furyk and Rickie Fowler who have gushed over the golf course as a test for our national open.

I don’t know what the future holds for this native land when the lease ends in a few years but it’s my sincere hope more RBC Canadian Opens will be played here.

Thanks to all the folks out here in British Columbia who’ve made this such a memorable week.

Professional Golf Career Requirements and Choices

The game of golf is the centerpiece for a massive industry. While golf used to be considered a sport for the ultimate pros and played mainly by business executives, anybody can pursue a professional golf career if they want to. there are many schools devoted to training people for the sport, which takes years of training and effort to master, or other aspects related to golf, such as management.

The first step in going into a professional golf career is to get educated. there are many jobs available in the industry, even in tough economic times, but all of them require people with firm knowledge of the sport. Attaining a degree in golf management is one way to do this. the curriculum of this kind of education program not only provides a background in how golf is played as well as the history of the sport, but prepares students on how to manage golf facilities, course operations, and staff. it also trains students on the basics of teaching golf, which is a solid career opportunity in the golf industry.

Your professional golf career can then be jump started by using a placement service, offered by many schools. Keep in mind that working in the golf industry doesn’t mean you have to be a pro golf player, though if you are good enough at the game, you may end up down that road. there are also many specialty jobs, in addition to management and teaching. These jobs have had a significant impact on the national economy overall, since many other industries are involved in serving the golf industry. the golf economy in the U.S. has been reported to be larger than that of the newspaper, performing arts, or motion picture industries.

A professional golf career can be directly related to course maintenance. On the engineering side, designing golf courses is an important job. the courses also need to be renovated occasionally and installation of infrastructure such as irrigation also requires the expertise of professionals with a skill for golf. all of the equipment that is seen on the golf course, ranging from golf carts to golf clubs, is purchased by experts who work for the golf course and who must know what products most suit the facility.

A huge component of the golf industry is all of the related supplies. From manufacturing to sales the many goods, apparel, as well as books and magazines all involve the work of dedicated professionals. A golf career can also take place on the media side. there are many magazines and websites related to golf, all requiring writers, editors, and publishers. On television there is golf-related work, directly on shows or writing for them. Producing and directing these also require knowledge of golf that wouldn’t be known by a non-professional.

The hospitality and tourism sector is another huge focus for a professional golf career. Golf course lodging also requires management, but also maintenance staff and people who can run golf training. Lodging also requires people with a focus in food and beverage skill, as chefs and restaurant workers can find opportunities at a lodge, course dining hall, or caterer that has business on the course. Real estate has also been impacted by the golf industry, since residential construction has boomed around golf courses.

Striving for a professional golf career first requires an education. your passion for the sport does not have to be quelled by inexperience or inability to be a great player, because many schools offer degree programs related to golf. You can also pursue one of many focus areas since so many types of jobs are related to golf, and the market for them is strong.
