The Easy 8 Step Golf Swing
New golfers! Instantly improve your skills on the golf course by following these eight easy steps to complete a full swing. These steps will give you specific details on how to hit explosive golf shots.
Step 1 – Start Position
Start by picking a specific target like the flag stick or the 150 yard marker. Be as precise as possible when selecting a target. Put the club behind the ball with the leading edge pointing at the target. Begin setting your feet, knees and hips pointing at the target. Check to make sure they are all parallel.
Step 2 – Ball Position
Different clubs have different lengths and lies, which require a different ball placement. For longer clubs, like the driver, play them off your left heel. For shorter clubs, play them closer to your zipper.
Step 3 – Taking the Club Back
To initiate the takeaway, start by rotating the shoulders, arms and hands at the same time straight back. You can visualize the club moving back on a clock from 12pm to 3pm. The arms and club will be slightly extended out from your body. A great way to check your progress, take a look and see if the toe of the club is pointed straight up halfway back. If that is the case, the club is still in a square position.
Step 4 – Top of Backswing
The back swing can stop when your front shoulder is underneath your chin. At this point, the shoulders will have rotated 90 degrees, the hips at 45 degrees with the left arm across your chest. Also, the wrists will be hinged at a 90 degree angle. The angle of the club will vary depending on length, drivers will have a flatter angle.
Step 5 – Initiating the Downswing
An awesome way to start the downswing is to shift your weight forward first. This can be done by making a slight bump forward with your hips towards the target. Now let your hands and arms drop to your side. By shifting the weight forward, this will force the arms to swing down to the ball.
Step 6 – Impact Zone
Now that we have started our downswing, we can focus on hitting the ball. As the body turns into the shot, your left wrist should remain flat with your right wrist bent backwards. We can avoid “flipping” the club face over and hitting nasty hook shots. Most importantly, make sure you speed up as you swing to the golf ball. As you accelerate into the shot, your right arm will gradually rotate over your left closing the club face to hit the ball straight.
Step 7 – Club Release
Once the golf ball has shot off the club face the wrists will unhinge. Your right arm will have completely rotated over the left. Our club face will once again be pointing skyward. The arms will begin to swing out in front of our body.
Step 8 – Finish
The arms will now begin to decelerate and wrap around our torso. As this happens, your torso will be pointed to the left of your target. Your belt buckle will be pointed straight ahead towards your target line. Do your best to maintain your balance throughout the swing.
