The Ben Cox 108 (give or take 47) climbs beyond $77,000

You heard it right—155 holes of golf in one day.

That’s more than eight and a half rounds of golf, and Ballyneal member Jim Colton accomplished that Wednesday, June 22, far surpassing his goal of 108 holes.

The whole 108-hole idea came out of Colton’s desire to reclaim the most holes in a day record at Ballyneal. Caddie Nick Flaa and assistant pro Gary Nelson played 100 holes a year ago, on June 28, 2010.

But the 108-hole day didn’t transpire last summer and was put on hold for Flaa and Nelson’s record to stand firm.

When Colton, from Wheaton, Ill., learned this spring about five-star caddie Ben Cox’s March 17 skiing accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down, he set the 108-hole benefit in motion.

When Colton sent out a blast e-mail about the Cox golf benefit to his closest golfing friends and guys he had previously hosted at Ballyneal, he was hoping to raise maybe $2,500 to help out the Cox family.

With more than $77,000 raised as of early this week, that goal has been surpassed 30 times. “I had no idea it would explode to be what it is now,” said Colton.

Colton finished the 108th hole at Ballyneal by 3:35 p.m., and the question then became “How many more can he get in today?”

When sunset officially hit around 8:19 p.m., Colton was on the fourth hole of his ninth round (hole #148). his blog notes they had to scurry around quickly just to complete the front nine.

“Thankfully, the night was clear and I was hitting only 4-irons off the eighth and ninth tees anyways, which made the ball that much easier to locate,” said the dedicated golfer.

“We had no issues seeing the ball on the 152nd and 153rd holes, so we decided to keep going,” Colton added.

“I just used a 4-iron on the tee on #10, playing it as a three-shotter. Tap-in bogey there, pitching wedge up into the dark, but clear sky to just right of the elevated 11th green. made a nice two and a half footer there for par and that was that.”

47 holes beyond the 108 goal.

“I will probably never qualify for a USGA (U.S. Golf Association) event, and I may never win a club championship,” said Colton.

“So this event is really the crowning achievement of my golfing life, and probably the most significant thing I’ve ever been a part of. To use my passion for the game of golf to help better a friend’s life is really a neat thing, and something I strive to do more of in the future.”

Colton shared a Father’s Day to remember on June 19 when he golfed two holes with Ben and his father Kenneth at Ballyneal. A specially-designed golf cart was brought in for Ben’s use, and Colton’s blog captures the experience of the day well.

His admiration for the father-son relationship and the whole Cox family is crystal clear. his blog can be accessed at www.wegoblogger31.com.

Benefit funds keep growing

Because of per-hole pledges and bonus kickers that folks had pledged for holes beyond 108, the extra 47 holes added over $10,000 to the cause, Colton noted on his blog.

Fund raising for the Cox benefit continues as pledges keep coming in. A tremendous raffle with opportunities to golf at top courses as prizes will be conducted July 9 at Ballyneal.

Information on the raffle can be seen at www.ballyneal.com, Colton’s blog or by e-mailing him at this e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Those wishing to donate to the Cox benefit can send checks payable to Prairie Home Baptist Church (memo: Ballyneal fundraiser), P.O. Box 271, Haxtun, CO 80731. Donations need to be received by July 8 to be eligible for the raffle. Donors are asked to e-mail Colton, as well, so he can keep tabs for the raffle.

Cox, who will be 24 this summer, was scheduled to return to his home in Haxtun this week after spending time at Craig Rehabilitation in Englewood.

It is his plan to return to Texas Tech in January to finish his last two semesters needed for his civil engineering degree.

Colton walks 45 miles in his 155-hole golf venture

With one round of golf at Ballyneal calculated at approximately 5.25 miles, Colton walked more than 45 miles last Wednesday.

“It was truly a fun and memorable day,” Colton said this week. “We were so determined to get in as many holes as possible to help the Cox family that I think that canceled out any pain in my feet or legs.”

Colton praised the support from staff and members at Ballyneal. “Most rooted me on, and I was playing through them for the second or third time of the day.”

Having head pro Matt Payne and assistant pro Brian Carruthers on the bag as caddies for most of the day made it that much more special, said Colton.

Originally planning to keep meticulous stats on fairways hit, GIRs (green in regulation), putts, lost balls and number of times each club was used, Colton chose to scrap that plan after 11 holes when it was apparent he was playing way too fast to stop and write numbers on a scorecard.

He stuck with 10 clubs, which he said helped a lot because it was usually obvious which club to use in any situation.

When trying to play fast, Colton said putting was the first thing to go. “If it wasn’t a birdie putt, I spent about three nanoseconds lining it up.”

So the 82-84s were all rounds in the 70s under normal playind conditions—at least that’s the story he’s going with!

Round 1 was Colton’s quickest round, in one hour and 27 minutes. The longest was Round 6 at an hour and 54 minutes.

He had 725 total strokes, which was 113 over par for the day—not bad for a day focused on quantity, not score.

During the day, Colton managed 12 birdies, 49 pars, 67 bogeys, 23 double bogeys, three triple bogeys and one quintuple bogey.

“One interesting dichotomy I thought about leading up to this event was the fact I was walking 45-plus miles to raise money for a kid who may never walk again,” said Colton on his blog.

“How could I possibly complain about the pain in my knees or my legs? how could I complain about a duck-hooked drive into the yucca? I got to do the one thing I love to do more than anything for 16 hours straight on a Wednesday!

“My prayer is that Ben is someday able to feel the pain that I’m feeling right now. maybe this event and this raffle will help make that prayer a reality. I selfishly pray I’m right there next to him when it does,” said Colton.

Golf Bags – What You Need to Know

If you have been golfing for a while you know how essential golf bags are. you know that it can be used for so many different things and how having the right equipment in this area can make a big difference in your overall enjoyment of the game. some of the most popular bags on the market today are the Callaway golf bag and Ping golf bags. If you’re just starting out in this sport you may not realize just how important having the proper type of equipment is. Today we will cover the two basic types of golf bags. There are of course many variations of these two types of but choosing the right type when you purchase your first golf bag can make a huge difference in whether or not you enjoy the game as much as you should.

Golf bags are essential pieces of equipment. you absolutely have to have a golf bag to store your clubs and keep them organized while you travel around the course. If you travel quite a bit and want to play a few rounds while on the road, you may want to chose a golf travel bag. There are two main types of golf bags and those are carry bags and cart bags. a carry bag will come with straps on it, it is light weight and it’s meant to be used by people who walk the golf course. a cart bag is one that is generally a bit larger and heavier and is meant to be strapped to the back of a golf cart. When you’re on the golf course everything you have will either be in your pockets or in your golf bag so having one that is properly designed and has features that meet your specific needs will make your day much more enjoyable.

Most avid golfers will have at least two golf bags but as a new golfer you should begin with a carry bag because the carry golf bag can be used at any golf course. they are obviously designed and best suited for use on golf courses where you actually walk the course. however there are some golf courses which do not allow walking and use of a golf cart is mandatory. In this case you would simply strap your carry bag to the back of the golf cart just like a cart bag would be used. If however you buy a cart bag as your first golf bag you’re pretty much limited to using golf carts all the time. Sure you could strap a cart bag onto your back and lug it around the golf course but you would be extremely tired by the end of the round and your game would suffer.

One variation of the carry bag that is extremely popular is the stand bag. this type of carry bag has legs that when you set the golf bag onto the ground the legs will automatically extend and hold the top of the bag up off the ground. this allows you easy access to your golf clubs and all of the different pockets that will be designed into the bag. These are by far my favorite type of golf bags.

New to Golf? Simple Golf Tips to Get You Started

Have you just decided to take up golf? Or have you recently begun to play? here are some essential but simple golf tips to get started on the right foot.

It is very tempting to jump in and buy a beautiful new set of expensive golf clubs. But don’t. Today’s golf equipment comes in a great variety for different golfing styles and abilities. Since you’re just starting out and really don’t know which type of clubs will suite you best, hold off on that purchase. Golf clubs aren’t cheap. You should expect to spend a few hundred or even thousands of dollars on a set.

If you get a set of clubs that doesn’t suit you, now you’re stuck. You can probably sell them, but it will be a big loss. If you absolutely MUST have your own clubs, start with a half set. this generally consists of five irons, two woods, and a putter. Get odd numbered irons – 3,5,7,9 – and wedge. this is plenty to get you started.

A better idea is to rent clubs or borrow so you can try out a few different ones. once you are ready to buy, consider getting slightly used second hand clubs. most pro shops and driving ranges sell them. they can give you advice and let you try out some different clubs.

You may meet fellow golfers that have their used clubs for sale, too. I again stress that you need know which clubs suit you before you buy. Don’t spend a lot of money at this stage.

You are probably chomping at the bit to playing an actual round of golf. Sorry, but don’t even think about going to a golf course yet. Without having gone through any type of golf training program, you’ll probably get very frustrated. besides, it’s really not fair for the golfers behind to have to wait for you.

tart at a driving range, take a few lessons, and get the basics under your belt. Then, you can play a 9 hole course. As you improve your golf game, you can work your way up to an 18 hole course.

You can take golf instruction lessons at driving ranges and golf clubs. You don’t have to join a golf club to get a lesson from their golf pro. You can find lots of beginner golf instruction materials online. there are some excellent golf books, DVD’s, and videos on the market that will help you to establish the fundamentals of the simple golf swing: grip, stance and posture.

Here’s an important beginner golf tip – stick to the basics and don’t get blinded by too much technical information. getting totally confused won’t help your golf game or your enjoyment of the sport, either.

Golf is a fantastic game. take some time easing into it. You will find it a rewarding pass time, sometimes totally frustrating, and always challenging. Like many others, you may find it downright addictive!

Choosing Your First Set of Golf Clubs

Choosing your first set of golf clubs is a crucial first step to begin golfing. Having the proper set of clubs can increase playing ability and make the game more enjoyable.

A basic novice set of golf clubs includes putters, drivers, irons, and wedges. Only fourteen clubs can be used on a course. Knowing which clubs to use and how to use them in different situations can help with swings, technique and increase scores.

Putters are for close range shots. around 40% of strokes on a course will be shot with the putter. this makes putters very important, as well as getting the right one. most professionals have many different putters they use based upon their recent playing and other conditions.

Most people buying their first set of clubs can only afford one putter so try all of them until you find one that feels right. There are four basic types of putters to choose from, all with varying grips and blades.

Peripherally weighted putters have their heads offset from the shaft of the club, increasing balance. Blade putters are precise, but require more skill to find the sweet spot. Mallet-headed models are weightier with bulky heads for a more powerful connection. Centre-shafted putters are well aligned and are very accurate.

Drivers are used for tee-offs when long shot distance is needed. These clubs are usually the most expensive, so make sure you have the right one before purchasing. the sweet spot on drivers is around 6 inches, making it easier to hit. Some drivers, like the ERC Callaway, are forbidden in some rules.

This is due to new technology increasing the distance they can hit the ball. Inquire about rules and regulations involving drivers before purchasing.

Irons are numbered one through nine, based on the angle of their face. Lower numbers indicate steeper faces. one irons are typically known as driving irons. two Irons are generally avoided by all but professional players. three irons are the longest irons available.

They have a hollowed out club head, which lowers the center of gravity, creating a larger sweet spot. this makes three irons ideal for new players.

The four iron has a shorter shaft than the three iron, causing it to be more unwieldy. this iron exaggerates the spin on the ball, which can cause it to stop rolling closer to where it lands. five irons are another good choice for beginners.

These comfortable clubs have increased control and distance. six irons are the primary choice of new golfers. They’re easy to hit with and have a moderate range.

The seven iron has a lower range than earlier irons. It’s ideal for low short shots, especially into the wind. eight irons are very consistent clubs. neither their range or accuracy deviate far from normal. their lofted clubface lets the player land the ball close to the pin with a minute roll.

Nine irons are versatile clubs with a wide range of uses. They are adept at both chips and drives. Nine irons are an asset to any club set.

Wedges are ideal for shots that are just out of the range of a putter. Wedges also come in a wide range of lofts, though most are between fifty and fifty-two degrees. Professionals generally carry two different types of wedges.

The Longest Hitting Drivers in Golf

What is the longest hitting driver in golf? All the major golf manufacturers claim they make the longest hitting driver. the Internet is filled with all sorts of ads about finding the driver with the most distance off the tee. Even your local paper golfing magazine has features about special products that guarantee you can drive like a champion. So, what’s the great secret?

The answer may already be in your bag or as close as your golf professional or online Internet golfing store. But, before dashing off to purchase that magical driver, lets look at what really makes drives go long and straight.

A longer club shaft – Conventional wisdom suggests that a driver with a loner shaft will hit a golf ball farther than a shorter shafted golf driver. the pun is intended. the bad news is that not everyone can hit a long shaft driver and the results can often be disappointing. Tests have shown that if a golf ball is mis-hit by as little as ½ inch, driving distance can be reduced by as much as 20 yards. the more you miss the sweet spot, the shorter the drives. and we’re talking about distance, not accuracy. Unless you are a low handicap golfer, by itself, a longer shaft could, in fact, hurt your distance off the tee.

Lighter club – it certainly helps, but it depends where the weight is removed. the theory is that the lighter the club, the faster the swing. the faster you swing your driver, the farther the golf ball flies down the fairway. since the shaft has the most weight, that is the best place to remove club weight in order to speed up the swing. here is where shaft flexibility enters the picture. if the driver’s shaft is too stiff, a lighter shaft weight may cause your shot to be short and a bit to the right. if you want to lighten the shaft, make sure shaft flexibility is part of your calculations.

More loft – Conventional wisdom also weighs in on loft. Simply put, the slower your swing speed, the higher the required trajectory necessary to keep the ball in the air. Check this out by comparing the distance with a three wood, versus the driver. if they are about the same, a common occurrence, consider a driver with a little more loft with the CG (center of gravity) slightly back from the club face.

Club head Design – this is where modern technology and strong club head design can really help the average golfer and is the place where technology has really helped long hitting drivers. Most of the above techniques work great if the ball is struck directly on the sweet spot. Unfortunately, only PGA golfers do that almost every time. Perimeter weighted clubs like the Callaway Big Bertha and drivers from Ping (who pioneered the technology), King Cobra and TaylorMade have become extremely popular driving companions for golfers, worldwide.

The Grip – the grip is one of the most overlooked aspects when choosing a driver, but one of the most important. this is the connection for you to the club and if everything isn’t comfortable and natural, your swing, and the resulting distance off the tee, hasn’t a chance. the size of the grip is totally dependent on the size of your hands. the bigger the hands, the thicker the grip. if the grip is uncomfortable or irritates your hands, change it quickly. this is where totally comfortable is really good.

Believe it or not, grip weight is also a distance factor. A light grip increases the relative weight of the club head. this is good for players with good strong swings. A heavier grip decreases the relative weight of the club head and makes it feel lighter. this helps the golfer with a slower swing.

There are many answers to the question of what is the longest hitting driver in golf. almost as many as there are golfers. Modern technology can help you find the best driver for your game. it also wouldn’t hurt to work on your swing so you can take advantage of the advanced weight and flexibility features on the big name clubs. Match your driver to your skills and play within yourself. That old sports saw really fits finding the longest hitting golf driver.

The Facts About Golf Driver Technology

The sport that is known as golf in this day and age is something that is common among many folk of different races and backgrounds. This is a sport that has to be played with decent weather, and is a type of sport that could be enjoyed with a group of friends on a Sunday or any other day of the week. you could play up to eighteen holes or you could have the game drag on to a much longer one.

With modern technology always being ever increasing, you have to be aware that the technical features of the modern golf drivers are always changing. some of the heads of a driver are known as footprints; this being that there are many different faces to this. you are probably wondering if the designs have an effect on the performance of your game?

Well, it does. The aerodynamics and the makeup of the club has everything to do with it. Here are some of the most technical terms in the golfing world and what they really mean.

The multiple head choices: This is due to the individual swings of the many golfers throughout the world. The nature of the head is what gives you the ultimate swing. one of the main reasons as to why this is looked at from this angle is because every golfer has specific needs that need to be catered for. Today golfers use totally different methods in reference to swinging and the angles that they attack from. there is no way that you could dictate which method is next on the list.

The Gear effect: This is also known as the blast from the past. This has in recent years made an enormous comeback in the sense of marketing as well as design. This is more the definition of the sidespin, and the result that you would get out of this is a curving ball. there are many more technical terms related to the shots as well as the ball usage of this game.

Offset heads: These were at one stage and still are today one of the famous measures used in the game. The offset comes in a range of models that are manufactured in iron. The simplicity of the physics of this iron is as follows; the toe of the club head will attempt to dynamically align itself with the shaft on impact. This generally means that during an offset club, the toe has more traveling distance to do in order to reach the face, resulting in an almost close impact.

What Are The Best Hybrid Golf Clubs?

The world is crazy about golfing and it shows! in 2005, Golfer’s Digest released a statistic saying there are almost 32,000 golf courses around the world. Over half of those alone are in the United States! After that comes Scotland, New Zealand and then Australia. It has become a passion that’s evolved into a billion dollar industry. People just can’t seem to get enough of it. Statistics show that about 4.6 million Americans play golf 25 times or more every year. It is especially popular because it’s a sport that can be played regardless of one’s age or gender. This sport is always changing and innovative ways are constantly being found to create the best players possible. Hybrid golf clubs are one of those innovations.

Hybrid golf clubs are sometimes called utility clubs. The two terms are universal so don’t get confused if you hear someone call them that. just what is a hybrid club? They bring you the best worlds of iron and wood clubs into one set. Hybrids allow you to get the ball up more easily and it gets the ball up higher. They are quite a bit easier to hit with and therefore quite a favourite among many recreational players. Professionals, however, are playing with hybrids as well. Because these clubs haven’t been around as long as irons or woods, there are few concrete rules when it comes to their design. That means you’ll have to be a very watchful consumer when you go to buy a set. You have to do your research and be vigilant. There’s no sense in buying something that isn’t the perfect fit for you. So, which clubs are the best?

If you want to improve your golf game with hybrid golf clubs, you simply have to buy the best. There is no point in spending money on a lesser quality product when it won’t be as good or last as long. The best hybrid club maker is undoubtedly Pinemeadow Golf. when it comes to golf club makers, this company is consistently on the top of their game. They’ve been one of the top fifty for many years and continue to put out extraordinary golfing products. They’ve been in the business a long time and know what they’re doing. best of all, their prices are reasonable and their staff is always willing to help you push your golf game to the best it can be. They even sell pre-owned clubs for those who just want to try a hybrid without paying full price, or for those whose wives don’t allow them a very high monthly golfing allowance!

If you are looking to improve your golf game, hybrid golf clubs might just do the trick. if you are thinking about buying but just aren’t sure, why not try them out first? Ask a buddy to borrow his set for a round or go try some in a golf store. many have indoor driving ranges and putting greens to practice on. Whatever you choose, be sure to take your time so that you walk away with something you truly love. You’ll be soon be aching ‘fore’ more!

Golf Is the Perfect College Fund Raising Idea

College fund raising ideas can be quite creative since you are not limited to events that only children can accomplish. Some of the best college fund raising ideas are simple to put together, and can often times reap huge profits for a college group or organization.

This article is designed to show you a fast way to raise money for your favorite college group. keep an open mind and try this golfing fundraising idea next time.

Golf Is in Season

Most colleges have a golf team or at least several people who love to play golf. one good college fund raising idea would be to have a crazy golf tournament where the golfers must perform crazy shots on each hole. you will give each team 9 or 18 envelopes at the start of the tournament, depending on how many holes they will play. Nine holes is recommended for this type of event.

Next you have the golfers open only one envelope per start of each hole. this will determine what they must do on that hole. they may have to throw the ball until they get it on the green. Then they must put the ball with a driver or 5 iron or whatever you come up with. you should keep it realistic, creative, and most of all fun.

You might even have a blind fold on some holes and require them to putt with a blind fold on. this will have everyone laughing and having a great time.

The way to make money is by charging each team a fee to compete. this fee should cover the course fee, plus add a reasonable amount of money to your college fundraising cause.

If you want to add even more money to this college fundraising idea you can sell extra strokes. the way this works is that on a hole if they want to have a do over or remove one bad stroke they can do so with a coupon they have pre-purchased at the beginning of the tournament.

At the end of the tournament you can hand out some nice prizes for first through fifth place or so. It would be best to try and get your prizes donated by sponsors. you can offer to place the company’s business cards in each envelope if they give a nice donation. there are several other ways you can probably think of to help promote companies who donate to your cause. they are mostly interested in the PR they will receive for helping.

With this type of college fund raising idea you should not over look having the people who donate as some of the people who also participate in the event. you will want to have a fairly good size turn out to make it profitable.

Golf Equipment – The Most Expensive Is Not Always Correct For You

The essentials of golf begin with the clubs you choose. Shopping on the Internet will save you time and money but choosing can be difficult, as there seems to be endless options. From our work with different golfing web sites we have seen sales for golf clubs dramatically increase in the past two years but do people really know what they are buying? I think the answer to this is yes if you have been playing for a few years and no if you are a total beginner. Some people starting out in the golf world have more money than sense. at the start of every golfing year (generally in March) you see new members on the first tee with thousands of dollars worth of equipment beside them and the golfing skills of a squirrel.

Excuse the expression from above but you really need to go back to the basics when starting golf. Golfing is a skill that needs to be developed, by having clubs worth thousands will not help you any more than the person starting with second hand clubs worth fifty dollars, I had that told to me from more than one Irish professional during my time. All the major club manufacturers are selling online at great prices, choose carefully and get well within your budget, the left over money can be well spent on other golf apparel.

What are the essentials to have?

Without being silly and mentioning the usual such as golf balls etc you should have the following:

Good waterproof golf shoes

Waterproof Jacket and Pants

Golf Cart (Manual or Battery)

Golf shoes are essential, and if they are not waterproof put them in the garbage. Your feet must be kept dry at all times. Golf is not always in great weather. if your feet are wet for a number or hours you will not feel comfortable and run the risk of catching a nasty cold or flu like symptoms. there are plenty of cheap golf shoes on the market along with cheap so called waterproof pants and jackets, but by spending carefully on the golf clubs allows you spend wisely on essential clothing.

Golf Carts:

Some people prefer still to carry their bags but most will purchase a golf cart. The carts can either be manual or battery operated. The manual speak for themselves and can be a folded away in the trunk of your car the battery are a little more complex and need some careful taught before purchasing. Battery operated carts need maintenance and constant recharging. Check out the battery life expectancy before you buy. Some are like buying a car, they have a speedometer, mirrors and a light, do you really need all that?

Golf Balls:

Yes the ball will make a difference to distance and spin but don’t be foolish, if you are a beginner you should expect to loose plenty so don’t go mad buying the latest and greatest, you need to improve you overall accuracy and game in general. The more experienced golfer should pay more attention to the ball they are using, you could be losing valuable distance from the tee meaning the difference on your next shot from an eight iron or a comfortable pitching wedge.

Golf Tee:

Short and simple, if you are using oversized heads allow for a higher tee. Plastic tees do not break as easily as the wooden type.

Golf Glove:

I have seen many a good golfer never wear one but in hot weather it gives you added grip and in damp conditions it could be your only grip. Should not cost you an arm and a leg.

Putter:

I’m not one for getting into graphite shafts and other related metal when purchasing a putter. I prefer something that I feel comfortable with, if that happens to be graphite and within my own budget, so be it. The putter today comes in all different shapes and sizes, from the standard height to the putter that tucks just under your chin. Beginners start with a basic putter and move on, basic meaning something that is not costing you an arm and a leg. Experienced golfers will have their own unique putter style they prefer.

Overall – Internet golf shopping:

The prices will seldom be beaten if you purchase online, do not worry about quality as the products are the very same as what you will find in your local sports store. The variety is very large and tempting and delivery is to your door. before you do go shopping online make a quick list of the essentials that you need.
