Golfers: Here’s an Easy Way To Hit Your Driver

Every golfer wants to hit their driver a long way, but most recreational golfers would be satisfied, more than satisfied, with hitting it straight. while this is the most difficult club to hit straight, it’s not that hard to do if you pay attention to a few key points.

Consider a 9-iron. The relatively extreme loft of the 9-iron puts much more backspin on the ball compared to a less-lofted club like the driver. This backspin swamps the sidespin that a less-than-perfect strike creates. thus almost everyone hits their short irons straight, even chronic slicers of the longer clubs.

With the driver, relatively little backspin is created, allowing sidespin to do its damage. This means that it is crucial for the clubface to be square to the club path when the driver meets the ball. a square hit like this does not generate sidespin, but sends the ball right down the fairway. to get that square clubface at impact, examine three parts of your swing.

1. when you set up to the ball, the face of the driver points right at your target. If the ball doesn’t go straight, there must be some point in your swing where that face gets out of square. For many golfers, this happens on the backswing moments after the club is taken away. The clubhead has moved less than three feet away from the ball and the error is set.

There is a temptation to keep the clubface pointing to the ball as the club goes back. This actually closes the clubface, causing a hook. Or, winding up for a big hit causes you to rotate your hands too far around, opening the clubface. Hello, slice.

Take the club away and stop when your hands get to hip height. Keeping your hands exactly where they are, turn toward them and lower the clubhead to the ground. If you’ve rotated the face, it will show up and you know what you have to change.

2. How far back to you take your hands on the backswing? Your clubhead alignment could be fine up to a point, but if you continue taking the club back, things could fall apart.

There was a time when professional golfers took their hands back as far as their flexibility would allow. Though they were highly skilled players, even they eventually realized that a shorter backswing provides the same power and much more accuracy.

At the top of your backswing, you should have a maximum shoulder turn, but keep your hands low–about as high as your head is enough. You won’t lose any power, but you’ll eliminate errors caused by trying to get more out of the swing than is needed.

3. Hitting with your hands means trying to square your clubface with your hands as it comes into the ball. to pull this off, your timing must be perfect and your feel for the clubface must be highly developed. when this works, it works really well, but it is hard to do consistently. when it doesn’t work, you have nothing else to rely on.

Here’s where you use your mind. You’ve started the club back square, you kept it square by not taking it too far back, now trust that it will stay square as you bring it down and through the ball. that is, don’t try, from any point, to hit the ball with your hands. Just swing the club down and through. anything extra you add is bound to cause you problems.

The common thread in all these tips is that trying to do too much with your swing to make it right actually causes it to go wrong. The driver is your power club, but it must be swung with care.

I would suggest you start looking at hybrids. They are the next generation of irons just like the metal drivers that replaced the wooden ones of old. Don't listen to anyone that says they are for people who can't hit irons. If people want to play with old technology let them waffle, but do yourself a favor and look into the hybrids.

I haven't seen your game, but I would get rid of the 7 wood (replace with 3 iron) and the chipper (replace with a gap or lob wedge). Personally I carry Driver, 3 and 5 wood, 3-PW, 52 and 58 degree wedges and of course the Flatstick.

Would you recommend Wilson or Ben Sayers golf clubs?

I am a beginner/intermediate golfer. I am looking for a new package set of clubs as I don't want to splash out on irons or drivers at the moment.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend either Wilson or Ben Sayers in terms of their quality and performance?

Thanks for all responses!

I have been looking and the most common package sets around seem to be Ram, Wilson and Ben Sayers. I have already had a bad experience with Ram so I am ruling them out.

The Ben Sayers M7 package set and Wilson Draw RX are both great package sets for beginners, so really its personal preference between the 2. as a beginner, it could be beneficial to get graphite shafts as these will promote a faster swing speed and give you greater distance.

As they say, it's the Indian, not the arrow. Instead of looking at a BRAND, you need to look at a TYPE of clubs. as a beginner, you should look for clubs labeled "Game Improvement" clubs.

These kinds of clubs are designed for people who don't hit it on the center of the face most of the time. They're more forgiving.

Asking someone for a brand is meaningless. you need to pick out 2 or 3 sets that are within your price point and try them at the driving range to see what works FOR YOU.

Get Titleist. I have been using them for years and they are amazing! from drivers to putters to wedges – I buy all my clubs at NJGolfman http://www.njgolfman.com/titleist.html

Wilson, I have never heard of Ben Sayers.

wilsons are a lot better than ben sayers

My first set of clubs was a set of Wilson Pro Staffs. They were the package deal of Driver, woods and irons. I learned the game with them and they worked fine. After two years I ended up buying a set of Ram clubs and those also helped me progress. I know you are looking to stay away from Ram, however I would definitely not say that Wilson is any better than Ram. as for the Ben Sayers, I have never used them but they are on the same range as the Wilson and Ram clubs. Most of those clubs in that price range ($150-200) for the whole set are going to be using the same cavity back designs and large over-sized heads for forgiveness. Maxfli also offers clubs in this price range that come stock with Adila shafts which are actually quite nice. Any packages that you buy WITH driver and woods will by ok irons but the drivers are typically aluminum with a titanium face (not very good). your best bet would be to buy a set of irons (without the driver and woods) and then buy the driver/woods separately as they will be much better quality.

My brother is new to golf as well and needed new irons, so I went to Dick's Sporting Goods and looked at all of their clubs (because we couldnt wait to buy them online as we were going to play that day). in the price range of $129 (full set of Walter Hagan clubs with driver and woods) up to $199 (3-PW for a set of Adams Golf XTD irons), we decided to go with the Adams Golf irons and get him a driver and woods at another time. the reason for this is because all of the sets under $200 that came with a driver, had aluminum headed drivers with a titanium face. this is very old technology and frankly very cheap. it will get the job done if you just want to learn how to swing but they can be very inconsistant from club to club and you may get a good one or may not. Maxfli makes a decent "full set" of irons that comes with the Driver and woods (3,5) and was only $250. I would have gone with these had they not been hybrid 3 iron and 4 irons. I will attach the links for the clubs I have mentioned for you to look at and read the reviews on. my recommendation to beginners is to buy a cheap ($) set of clubs but not a cheap set (cheaply made). try to find a used set of Taylormades, Callaways, Pings, etc… because you know the companies have spent the money in design to produce a competitive club. other companies such as Ram and Wilson do not spend the big bucks in design. They make their money selling cheaper products to the masses.

Again, Wilson clubs will teach you golf as will any clubs. however, there will come a point where you may begin to wonder if you are being slowed down in progression due to the quality of your clubs. Why not just buy a "good" set of used irons (obviously in good shape from Ebay or craigslist or pro-shop…etc…) and know that it's not the clubs hindering you? the best thing you can do for yourself is to go to a local sporting goods store or pro shop and hit all the different clubs you can. Find a set that just "feels" good and you hit well, then go buy them. Swing the more expensive ones too to see if you hit them any better. you may be able to get the Taylormade R7s used on Ebay for less than the Wilson's you were looking at and they would be a MUCH better quality club. Besides, the first swing you take with your new irons will make them used anyways right?

Would you recommend Wilson or Ben Sayers golf clubs?

Should i get golf clubs at a thrift store?

Like i said in one of my other questions i have around $150 to spend an i noticed that my local thrift store has hundreds of golf clubs for like $5 up and down. Irons, Drivers and wedges but not bag (might get that later) Should i get clubs there?

When I started, I bought a set of clubs at a yard sale for fifteen bucks they were a set of old Wilson's and soon I was tearing up the course. later I put new grips on them and added some wedges and a different three wood. I was able to play those clubs down to a 39 on my course which was a par 36 9 hole. most of all it gave me the chance to learn the game , and to see if I was really going to stick with it without the huge outlay of cash on a new set. just try to find clubs that are similar, if there is not any sets there

As long as they are name brand and not fake, not sure why you would pass it up. If you are concerned that they are fake, might be one of those "too good to be true" things.

If you can, try to get matching clubs. Even if they're the wrong size for you at least they'll be consistently off. Thrift stores are one place to get clubs, but maybe try craigslist, ebay, yard sales, classifieds or local pawn shops.

Used golf balls will help too. try http://usedgolfballstore.com and just start playing. You'll know when your clubs are the limiting factor in your game.

Should i get golf clubs at a thrift store?

What are the best cheap golf clubs for an above average golfer.?

Just curious. I play well with the cheap set I have (very cheap) and was looking for a good buy.

TaylorMade or Titleist

I do fundraisers for a Golf Tournament in the Bay Area at Poppy Ridge and they recommend those two brands
Taylormade is under $200

Give me a budget and I'll give you a recommendation. Also are you looking for a full set?

I bought Pinnacles Irons, and had them sized (Free) with wider grips for my big hands. they were under $400.

Bangkok Post : Drive for show, chip and putt for dough

One of the things that I emphasise in my junior training project with the Thailand Ladies Golf Association is the importance of the scoring clubs which include the putter, wedges and short irons of 120 yards and inside.

Thai junior players take part in a practice session in Kuala Lumpur.

At this point in their development, I know that it is a lot more fun to learn to have a swing that hits the ball a long way than to spend time working on the shorter, more controlled shots.

Certainly it can be an advantage to have a long game that you can rely on, but the truth is that almost two-thirds of the strokes in a round of golf are played from within this “scoring zone”.

So it is just as important to learn how to follow that nice long drive with the fewest strokes possible.

Unfortunately, I find so many junior and amateur players follow their lengthy drives with sometimes a duffed pitch or often a poorly executed wedge shot that leaves them too far from the flag for a decent birdie try.

To me, this is a waste of opportunity.

So I have been telling the junior players in my programme that any time she has a 9-iron or less in her hand, she should think that she will try to get this ball up and down in two strokes.

I believe that players of all skill levels can improve their scores by at least 3-4 strokes per round by simply working on their scoring clubs.

When I talk about a great wedge game, I don’t mean just being able to hit to accurate distances. I also mean an ability to control the trajectory and spin of the ball.

Sometimes you need to keep it low and skipping. other times you’ll need to pitch it high and stop. this makes for many variations of shots to be practised.

Most pros work tirelessly on this part of their game because they understand that it is much easier to save shots from within this scoring zone than to try to perfect the long game.

Logically, wouldn’t it be easier to work on the shorter shots that require shorter, simpler strokes than those longer, more complicated swings?

Yet not a lot of people seem to get this idea and continue to choose to go to the range to get the satisfaction of launching their drives to the end of the range.

Reluctance to spend time on the short but essential part of the game is one barrier and proper practice facilities to improve Thai golfers’ skills is another challenge, I find.

The driving ranges here hardly come with decent greens for chip and putt.

If there is a putting green, the grass is often so long it’d ruin your stroke. Practice bunkers are even harder to find.

So the past week at the Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open at the Mines Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, after my four junior players finished their last rounds, I asked them to bring out their wedges and go take advantage of the nice short game facility while we still had it.

Sandy Wongwaiwate, 15, and Pornvipa Sakdi, 16, finished fifth (76-70-73) and sixth (70-77-73) respectively in the individual competition, while they were tied third in the team division.

They drove the ball beautifully, but a sharper wedge game and putting would have put them in contention on this short but tight 5,700-yard layout.

Now they know what they need to work on.

If all amateur players would just take the time to practise their scoring clubs, they would too enjoy better scores and have a lot more fun playing golf.

Can cheap golf grips cause inconsistency?

I have just bought a new slazenger k1 fast and fairwaywood at christmas, and already, they feel unusual (in 4 months!). I might be buying new golf pride DD2 grips for my irons. should I also replace the grips of my driver and 3 wood even though they are new?

Well, if you wanna combine everything and that everything looks the same probably you should chance the grips to the 3 wood and your driver also, but if it was my driver i would stay with their actual grips.. actually i was on that situation 2 months ago but i indeed stay with my actual grips. they were designed for my driver why change it..
hope i help you:)

Its all about feel from one club to another…

My driver is not the same as my irons, and my irons is not he same as my wedges…

Each unique feel presents its own presence of what needs to be done.

Absolutely, immediately, if not sooner. Good luck.

The rubber in the cheap grips doesnt last as long before it starts to break down. also how they were put on could have an effect on how they feel.

I live in Georgia and I'm looking for inexpensive golf lessons for beginners. Anyone know of any?

Check into your state/local USGA sections. Out here in CA there are free lessons for members covering a ton of different aspects of the game (IE, one day is wedges, another is putting, another might be irons and still others are for Driver, sand, etc.) VERY COOL

One of the first things that I would do would be to buy and read Harvey Penick's Books. the are very informative and you will learn something about golf, but more important you will learn golf courtesy. Lots of courses have clinics that are fairly inexpensive but you are in a class with several people, but you should get enough knowledge of the basics to practice and master to keep you busy for a lifetime.
